#1 ranked student of 2019

This year’s most accomplished college applicant hails from Louisiana. She scored 139 acceptance letters and $9million dollars in scholarships. It’s likely there are more on the way. Bravo!!!

So silly. I would hardly call that the standard to name someone most accomplished. It’s an attention grab, and not much more.

This is getting beyond silly. With the publicity, each year more and more kids try to beat the previous “record.” My D’s almost $3 million pure merit with 16 apps is far more impressive and she turned down all interview requests. Our private merit search didn’t need to be broadcasted. I’m happy to chat privately with anyone wanting details and guidance, however, and have and continue to do so. These articles however are sending the wrong message. It needs to stop.

Honestly, who cares? I admit I didn’t read it, because it means nothing to me. Recent article about local kids from all walks of life , what colleges they picked, why and their plans - interesting. Local young man from an impoverished school district going on the become a Rhodes Scholar - impressive.

This is very sad.

This is a weird article. She already has a degree from community college. She made a “short list” of desired schools. So is 130 a short list, or did she get 130 acceptances including from schools she didn’t apply to? And what are “more than four national prestigious scholarships in the world”? Are they national, or in the world? And, last, the Guiness Book of World Records lists a world record for the largest dollar of scholarships? Do they convert other currency?

Did anyone read the article accompanying the news piece? It sounds like it was written by someone in kindergarten:

-“The Bio Chemistry bound student”

-“The aspiring surgeon was also offered more than four national prestigious scholarships in the world.”
-“Cormier has set a new world for receiving the largest dollar of scholarships in the world”

The news media is a joke.

@TheBigChef I did read it and thought the same thing. Those details can’t possibly be correct.

I’ve never understood the $Xmillion in scholarship claims. You can only attend one college, right?

Not bravo, IMO. We hear these stories every year. There are schools that do this as an incentive to get their kids to apply to colleges, and I get that. But what a waste of man hours and resources. Never mind that some kids who might have needed those scholarships were possibly shut out due to this publicity stunt.

These deceptive articles unintentionally highlight the need to fix such irrational abuse of a well intentioned system instead of promoting and rewarding it.

@doschicos: It’s a silly metric, one that drives stuff like the T.M. Landry Prep scandal. Is this what application waiver programs were built for?

@“one+two” :

: And, last, the Guiness Book of World Records lists
: a world record for the largest dollar of scholarships?

I searched for all records in the Guinness database with the keyword “scholarship.” There is nothing relating to college scholarship money. You all can take a go at it with a different keyword, but it makes me a little suspicious of the article as a whole.

@Lindagaf *sarcasm

@“one+two” They converted to the Zimbabwe dollar, where one dollar = 43 quadrillion Zimbabwe dollars

I find this disgusting and a complete waste of resources.

I find this type of story very amusing. It’s as if someone applied for a thousand jobs, was offered one hundred, totaled all the salary and benefits from the one hundred jobs and announced they were making $4 million a year, even though they only took one job paying $30K.

Don’t forget the Common Black College Application only costs $35 to apply to up to 44 schools, and it allows those students to permit many HBCs to access it. The schools can then send the applicant an acceptance, even if they didn’t apply to that school. When you hear of these stories of kids with crazy number of acceptances, this seems to be a big part of it. The reporters never include those facts, whether out of ignorance or because, once word gets out, the headlines will cease to become clickbait.

Nothing here to see, move on. Let the paramedics and police do their work in peace.

Since they couldn’t wait just a few more days until May 1 to publish this article including the one lucky school she selected, I googled her to see if there was any update regarding her decision. Strangely…nothing. There is no information about this person online except for a couple of local news articles covering this application process. I feel disappointed and unfulfilled not knowing the outcome!
