I ran the NPC at the University of Denver (it specifically asks which parent the student lives with and only asked for my income/financial/home equity information). But I’ve noticed that DU also requires a CSS noncustodial profile. My son’s dad is currently unemployed and has been since the beginning of the year although he was employed in 2015. Will the NPC number change based on the noncustodial profile?
most likely. In the case of your having 2 divorced parents and your school needing the profile and the non-custodial profile, the net price calculator will not be accurate for your situation
On the UDenver NPC site it says:

is the University of Denver's policy to **require information and financial support from both biological/adoptive parents ** of students when applying for aid. Learn more about noncustodial parent requirements. (Hyperlink)

Is he remarried? If so, then his wife’s income will count as well. What is he living on?
This is a risky situation, assuming that the NCP will be re-employed at some point. Your son might get a nice FA pkg for freshman year based on dad’s unemployment, but once dad is employed, the aid may disappear.
If dad gets a job soon, then there may not be an special consideration.
Agree with above. For the 2017-2018 academic year, the 2015 tax return will be used for income purposes. If your dad is still unemployed at that time, you might be able to ask the school for a special circumstances consideration.
But he could very well be working by that time.
My son’s dad is not remarried and is unlikely to obtain employment in the near future. I do not know how much he made in 2015, so I’m just trying to figure out how much his income will impact the NPC. Thank you for the replies.
I saw that DU requires information from both parents, but the NPC does not ask for or allow you to input the other parents’ income, so it’s hard to get an idea of how that additional income would alter the result. (In all likelihood, he will still be unemployed in October when I complete the FAFSA and the CSS Profile, but I know those are both based on 2015 when he was employed.)
Do you know how much he earned in 2015…roughly? If so, run the NPC using his info and see what the results are.
Should I just add his income to mine? There’s no option to put in both parents’ income separately.
For a guestimate…add his income to yours. But remember…it’s a guestimate!
Very often the net price calculators are not accurate for divorced parents. Also your NPC doesn’t ask for the NCP income…so how accurate would you exoect that to be? Not!
The NPC do not make it easy for divorced parents to get an accurate assessment (and with so many divorced parents, you would think they could adjust the calculators)! It’s really frustrating!
I hear you. But there are so many variables with divorced parents…custodial parent needs to add in child support and spousal support. Both parents could also have spouses who also count.
Some NPCs do ask for both parents’ incomes.
Obviously, a college which uses the non-custodial parent income but whose NPC does not have provision for listing that income is doing it poorly.
Unless you’re prepared to pay your ex’s share, be sure to include a couple of financial safeties.
