DS is a junior and interested in video game design, would this be his major? are there specialized college/Univ. for this or does he have to venture into Comp Sc or Engineering?
It is generally found in the Comp Sci/Design camp. I know Shawnee State in OH has one. Many colleges will work on a hybrid Comp Sci degree with some electronic art/design thrown in.
Thanks, good to know.
Do you have recommendations for top schools in this field?
There are two major aspects to game design–the art/story and then the programming side. Which is he more interested in? You would look for a BFA vs BS degree depending on interests.
@gouf78 I am not exactly sure but leaning towards the programming side. I am not really familiar with this gaming thing, so any thoughts or comment or site referral will be helpful.
Our D just enrolled at NYU in their Game Design program. As other posters have said, the first cut is between a programming orientation (computer science/engineering) or an artistic/story one. Some programs have a little of each but tend to emphasize one or the other as you move through the program. Another distinction is specialized art school or engineering school vs. more comprehensive university. We chose the broader university setting as she wanted a diverse student body and I liked the fact that she had more choices if she wanted to change majors without having to transfer. We took the Princeton list and another list and just starting working it down until we got to 8-10 programs and she applied to them all. Some required a portfolio and extensive essays; others were just stats oriented. Feel free to PM me as we invested alot of time in the process.
Champlain College and High Point University have gaming schools.
Texas A&M BS in Visualization in the College of Architecture. Game design and computer animation.

Pretty good list of schools with some descriptions of individual schools. At least a good starting point.
Thanks.
@SoCratz I would really love to tap your brain, how do I PM you? would love to know more.
Look up Ringling Game Design on Youtube then look for videos by DeepFriedPaint.
She’s a student who has made videos over the past few years about her journey as a Game design student and the classes, type of projects she’s working on etc. She started them as a freshman and is now a Junior. Fun to watch the evolution.
They are interesting and will give you a better idea about what you learn in game design
The Game Design program at Drexel University offers a BS through the College of Media Arts and Design or a BS through the CS department depending on which way you lean:

Animation Career Review has a pretty good list of game design schools (some of which are already mentioned here)
Yes, it is a major!
