Decision: Accepted!

Date applied: November 30

Date decision postmarked/received: Received January 27

Accepted at which school/major at USC: Viterbi School of Engineering (Undecided)

Stats:

SAT Total: 2230 M: 740, CR: 750, WR: 740

ACT: 35

SAT Subject Tests: 800 Math 2, 780 Biology, 780 U.S. History

GPA-UW/W: 4.000 / 5.1304

Rank: 2 / 400-some.

AP/IB classes: 16 APs: AP World (5), AP Environmental (5), AP HuG (5), AP U.S. (5), AP Calc AB (5), AP Biology (5), AP English Lang. (5), AP Psychology (5), and AP Physics B (4) before this year; at present, AP English Lit., AP German, AP Statistics, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, and AP Comp. Sci.

Subjective:

Essays: I’m not sure how objective I can critique my own essays, but I’ll try. My primary goal when writing was to write with honesty and personality, to be able to concede my shortcomings while overall communicating a positive, diverse image of myself and demonstrating that I’m a human being first and a high-achieving student second. My secondary focus was to portray myself as anything but the stereotypical engineer or math/science nerd–while I let some of my love for STEM show through, I also tried to emphasize my belief that English, social sciences, and the arts are at least equally important and I’m not just another number-crunching neckbeard. :P

Teacher Recs: One from my AP Calculus teacher and one from my AP English Lang. teacher, both of whom I had classes with my junior year. I waived my right to access for recommendations, but I think both were probably fairly strong.

Counselor Rec: Fairly strong as well, I think. I don’t know my counselor all that well, but I submitted a substantial writing sample to her (at her request), met all of her deadlines without needing to be reminded, thanked her sincerely and frequently for her help, etc.

EC highlights: Uncountable hours spent in marching band in 9th-11th grade. In one band or another, I’ve soloed on trombone every year since 10th grade–in wind ensemble my sophomore year, in marching band my junior year, and in jazz band my senior year. I also play guitar.
Quite a few hours spent in political and community activism my sophomore year–phone banking, registering voters, etc. After a referendum passed to criminalize civil unions (yay, North Carolina…), I started a political awareness club at my school that continued some of the activities I had participated in up through the 2012 elections.
A few other miscellaneous things as well: academic team, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, etc.

Location/Person: Central North Carolina. The South.

State or Country: North Carolina

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male
Other Factors, hook?: Mostly listed above. National Merit semi-finalist. Despite wanting to major in engineering, I attended the North Carolina Governor’s School for English last summer, which changed my life and was the subject of my Common App essay.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Accepted AND a Presidential Finalist! Words cannot express how humbled, honored, and excited I am to have this opportunity, especially as I read about the incredible and inspiring achievements of others that have come this far. These past four years, no matter how hard, have been more than worth this moment, and I can’t wait for the future I have ahead. Congratulations to everyone accepted so far–fight on!
