Hi,
I am a sophomore applying for Junior year (i know my chances are lower). I was wondering what my chances are:
GPA 4.0
JV cheer
JV Softball
MUN
Red Cross (president)
Speech and debate.
Applying to: The Master’s school, Peddie, Milton, Lawrenceville, The hill school.
What are some backup schools and what should my SSAT score be around?
Thanks.
I think you have a really good shot at milton maybe you’d need the highest score for lawrencville but id shot for around 85 or above i’d look at st marks as a back up its in massachusetts its episcopal but not strictly there’s lots of school spirit great campus many extracuricculars
Milton has very few spots in 11th grade.
Lawrenceville has very few spots in 11th grade also; I think they are mostly to fill gaps in a certain sport or activity or to allow someone to come with unique circumstances (ie, (Hypothetical): legacy applicant’s family is moving back from overseas who is amazing field hockey goalie which they need and the CEO/alum parents have talked to Admissions). I say this based on what we, and other families, heard from AOs at the interview. They were not warm, and kept repeating they have 0-6 spots a year for 11th grade, often zero, and that any new 11th grader would “have to hit the ground running” (implying my super independent 11th applicant couldn’t - despite high scores, athlete, and his independence). Other families got the same spiel. It would be nice if they were more clear in their materials that this is the case.
Some kids apply as repeats, the acceptance rate substantially increases when you’re talking about 10th grade instead of 9th. Just a thought.
You may have better luck at Masters and Peddie. I think it’s okay to ask Admissions when you interview how many seats are available in the class. Would you want to repeat 10th?
I applied to Milton last year and got waitlisted, I don’t know how that will effect my chances.
you also shouldnt repeat if you will be on the really old side
Does my high school play any factor into the final decision, I go to a really competitive high school.
I might do a repeat considering I am also very young for my grade, late birthday.
From what I can tell, there seems to be a pretty wide age range within each grade.
@futureboarding11 not really. It will be your grades -validated by your SSAT, essays and interview
I emailed all the schools about how many spots they had and so far only Hill has responded.
Sophomore year- 25
Junior year 15
If you’re considering applying for Junior year, be sure to ask what goes into the GPA calculation that the BS sends to colleges, and what the colleges will see on your transcript. My (limited) understanding is that grades earned at another HS may not be included in the GPA calculation at BS. And in some cases the transcript info from your old school may not be as complete - with full course descriptions etc. Someone who knows more may want to chime in, but a friend with a DS going through the process last year decided to repeat 10th because of some of these issues. It would be very difficult to start at a new school, boarding for the first time, in junior year, especially if those junior year grades are going to be so critical… more critical than usual.
I have the score for my SSAT : 96th. Is that good enough?
great! make sure Milton knows you are reapplying as a student who was waitlisted last year, and what you’ve done to improve your application. Good Luck. I’m rooting for you and hoping for Milton!
