Boarding School

I am currently in Grade 8 and I am considering looking into Boarding School for my High School years. Although I’m not confident I will be accepted into the schools I choose to apply too. I am looking into schools such as Baylor, Hotchkiss, etc. I don’t have any ‘special’ aspects to me, I am a Military Child so I haven’t been able to commit to any extracurriculars.I currently have one B and the rest are A’s. I am in honors classes and considering testing for Gifted Classes for the second semester. I am also in Girl Scouts, and I am also working towards my Silver Award. There are multiple chances in the future for me to compete in writing contests, and they hold appealing titles. I am in the Junior Optimist Club, which focuses on community work and helping those in need. I want to join the Teen Board at the local library near me and I can get certain awards from the White House if I am able to help out enough. I feel that I would do fine when I am interviewed, in the schools that require an interview as part of the admissions process. I also took the PSAT and got in the 23rd Percentile in Math and the 85th Percentile in Reading and Writing. Although I am afraid that this won’t be enough qualification to these top schools unless I participate in a sport or an art. Neither of which I am good at nor wish to be apart of, except Volleyball but the season is already over. Is there anything I can do that would make me stand out more to a Boarding School?

Quick question : Will you need financial aid?

Yes, I will need financial aid

@AlohaScholar If you have any questions about Baylor, feel free to ask me. I go there.

@AlohaScholar , you need to target a few schools that are less selective than the acronym schools (although I don’t know what’s on the rest of your list.) I worry that the math score will not help your case if you are committed to BS. You have an interesting background, so that should help, but that doesn’t make up for stats that might concern the AOs at schools like Hotchkiss.

I would highlight how you have managed all the various moves you’ve made, made new friends, etc. You must be very open and adaptable – those are good qualities!

It’s early for taking the PSAT. You need the SSAT for boarding schools. Are you from Hawaii by chance, @AlohaScholar ? That will help if you are - for geogaphic diversity which the boarding schools like.

You should check out the “Prep School Admissions” page on this site. The moderator @skieurope can help move your post there.

Already done.

Thank you all, although I still have one more question. How can I make my application more appealing by next year? I know I don’t have much time, but I would like to know if there is anything else I could do.

Are you applying to come to the schools freshman year? If so, you shouldn’t be taking the PSAT. You should be taking the SSAT.
