I was just wondering if anyone had advice for skipping geometry. I have A LOT of spare time. Would just finishing the Khan Academy course be enough? I like Khan Academy, but I feel like it doesn’t do enough proofs. If Khan Academy is not sufficient, then what other ways can I skip Geometry? I really want to start off BS in Geometry.
There’s a thread about this (slightly more general but it should probably answer your questions) in Prep School Admissions:
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/2064293-math-placement.html#latest
Some schools may accept the Johns Hopkins CTY online courses as credit, but I’m not really sure.
I love geometry and hate the idea of anyone skipping it.
Your last sentence doesn’t make sense in the context of the rest of your post. Are you talking about skipping algebra? Another bad idea in my opinion.
Most boarding schools will not accept outside courses for credit.**
Anyway, then link @Ravenclaw3 provided will have a lot of info. But bottom line, you would need to pass the placement test to go onto the next level, and even then there are pros and cons for an incoming student trying to do that. Also note that regardless of placement test results, if you are struggling with the higher level at the beginning of the term, you will be bounced down a level.
Geometry is a fantastic subject that definitely should not be rushed. Forget about Khan or CTY. Not rigorous enough, or even fun enough.
If you have the time, can work independently at a high level of rigor, and are comfortable interacting with fellow students online, check out the Introduction to Geometry course offered by AoPS. There is a section starting March 26. No boarding school course on geometry will come close.
Good luck, let us know what happens.
Geometry is axiomatic and proof-based, and is very different from any other HS math subject. It’s only HS math subject that trains you to think more abstractly. Instead of online courses, you can also educate yourself by reading books on the subject. AoPS would also be a good source for these books.
Watch out if you have any interest in attending a UC system school… they are particular about Geometry being included.
Whatever you decide, be sure to check with the math department and confirm they will waive the geometry requirement. Self study may not be sufficient unless they offer a placement test (not all do.)
Thanks
