'02 Grad up for final MLB All-Star spot

chris young, a 2002 princeton grad and a right-handed starting pitcher in his second full big-league season with the san diego padres, is one of five national leaguers up for the final spot on the league's all-star game roster. fan balloting for this last spot began immediately after the selection show tonight and continues until 3 p.m. on thursday. young's numbers are certainly good enough to justify selection (7th in the NL in ERA, 2nd behind only pedro in WHIP and BAA), but he's unfortunately up against some stiff competition in bobby abreu and nomar garciaparra. if voted in, he'd be one of the few ivy leaguers to make the team since lou gehrig.

"The more I think about it, the more I think it will be a joke if he isn't in Pittsburgh next week. Young works here today against the Giants and again in Washington before the break and, if he continues at this pace, he shouldn't just make the All-Star team, he should strongly be considered for the start."

young just named NL pitcher of the month for june:

"Young went undefeated in June, going 3-0 over his five starts. He pitched 30.2 innings, allowing 16 hits, five runs, four earned, with 13 walks and 34 strikeouts. The Princeton alumnus set a career-high with a 12-strikeout game on June 9th vs. Florida. The 6'10" ace, who is tied for second for being the tallest pitcher in Major League history, did not allow more than two earned runs in any of his starts. This is the first time he has earned the honor."
