06 and not liking new SAT

im in the class of 2006 and, well, i just don't want to take the new SAT and i have already taken the old one and am happy with my scores. i plan on taking SAT II: Writing this january. will colleges accept this.

CB is giving me some lame safe response, saying that it depends on the college. i know it depends on the college, but can any of you tell me which colleges will REQUIRE the new SAT or allow an old SAT with the writing SAT2.

are the top ivy league schools demanding this? what about the average majority?

except the UCs (and maybe other state universities), probably mostly all of the private colleges will accept the Old SAT + SAT II Writing. Some, like Princeton and Dartmouth, said they recommend the New one, whatever the heck that means.

im in the exact same situation only tht mine is a little bit different...you see im taking the sat 1 in January and I have already prepared well for it thus I wont be taking the new one either however I haven't taken the sat 2 writing test and its going to be discontinued after January so I wont even have a chance to take it.... I know that a lot of colleges actually require the sat 2 writing but a lot of them even most ivies simply say that the sat and 3 sat 2s is fine. I also checked on the college board website and it has a table with the testing requirements of many universities for the class of 2006 and 2007 most of them don't require the new sat and many of them don't even require the writing sat 2 ( Columbia does though) ...either ways I suppose that if the admissions people really see something worthy in you it wont really matter which sat you took.

I just got the official sat guide in the mail today from amazon and the math section looks to be the easiest thing ever given by the collegeboard. Its good for people like us who like straightforward math (not the gay box like thing on the PSAT that owned me and is never crossed upon in pure mathematics still ed) and seems to be easy to prep for. GoodLuck

elodie you might want to check on that because as far as i know most if not all selective uni's require the writing.

I'm also c/o 2006 and was checking some college websites. Harvard, MIT, and Stanford will definitely accept the old SAT, if that helps any...

elodie, is it possible that you can take ACT's optional writing test? i don't know if you can take that separately or not, though.

a little bit of info: tells you what some colleges want for 06ers. most colleges are fine with old sat + writing.

Guys, the new SAT isn't really as scary as most people think. In fact, the writing section is easier than the SAT II (you have 25 min. instead of 20) and there's less vocab (hours wasted memorizing the difference between pernurious and pernicious, and did you know that ponderous means "heavy and bulky"). Besides, since this is the first time collegeboard is issuing this test, they can't have everybody fail. The leading test preps agree that the test is no harder than the older one, and may even be easier.

Meh, the new SAT shouldn't be bad, but it'd just be annoying to have to take another standardized test (I mean, if you already have a decent old SAT score, there are better things to do on Saturday mornings). I don't know about the rest of you, but I just want to hurry and finish with my tests so that I'll never have to look at another Collegeboard test again (except for APs :p).

wvernrider, that's exactly why i like the old SAT. i spent so much time memorizing words, i don't want it to go to waste.

AlexMartin,

Your time spent memorizing words are not going to go to waste. Think about it. Sure, the analogies are removed, but there is still the SC, which is essentially all vocab.

Also, I dunno if you've noticed in the Collegeboard's online sample New SAT, but I noticed the increased number of hard vocab words on the reading passages. Many of the words are key to understanding the passage as a whole. If you didn't know what serendipity meant, you would have screwed up on the second question on the black women history passage..etc..

thank God for the more straightforward math...and no more analogies...I really do favor the New SAT...verbal is a breeze...especially the writing

i don't like the idea of popping out an essay in 20 minutes. I need an essayto ahv ethe right feel, just the right semantics and the perfect intro. otherwise I essentially am stuck. Not so bad on straightforward essays( like book critiques) but horrible on stuff the SAT may have me write.

you can actually take more than 25 minutes for the essay...if you finish everything else before time is called you can come back and finish...

and get caught and get your score canceled.

hahaha... great add-on vtran.

does anyone know if i can take the ACT's optional writing test... where can i even find tht out...anyways is the math stuff on the new sat easier ... harder or what? If it doesnt work out i might just end up taking it but next year or something as it doesnt even come out here beofre then

this site might also be somewhat hepful...http://www.collegeboard.com/prof/counselors/apply/12.html

elodie, thanks for all the great info!!

unfortunately, i think ACT writing is only an essay; it's supposed to complement the ACT english. but don't worry, some colleges don't require writing. and the new sat isn't that bad, it's just that i've already got a good score, so i don't want to take it again.

uw...well im taking the jan sat and then ill think about the new sat later...iv still got plenty of ib to worry about
