07 applicant who needs guidance Help!!!

Thanks for looking. I am 17 years old and a senior at small private school in New York City. I am interested in applying to USNA, but am a little lost as to how to go about doing so. I've already done the prelim application thing and I'm now waiting for a response.
Here are my stats
Unweighted GPA: 3.6
Class Rank: My school does not rank but somwhere in the top 25% for sure
Rigor of schedule: Extremely hard, I've taken the hardest classes in almost every subject.
SAT: CR: 660 M:650 W:660 (taking again in november and hoping to get in the 700's)
SAT II (I don't know if these matter): Biology E: 720 Chem: 700 US His:740
Sports: Varsity player on Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball since freshmen year. I go to a very small school so I've won MVP for all those teams numerous times as well as league all-star awards. I've also been athlete of the year at my school twice.
Summers: I've spent two summers working at a day camp in New York and my last summer interning for Thomson Financial which is a Fortune 500 financial services company (I don't think that matters too much)

Medical Problem: I have horrible vision (wear contacts) and I don't know if this will disqualify me. Any insight?

So basically I'm hoping I can get a few suggestions from other members as to:
1. What my next step is? Should I get a reccomendation right away or should I wait and see if I'm actually a candidate
2. Critique my stats i guess? Do I have any reasonable shot of getting in?
So basically I really want to serve my country and attend USNA, but am lost so if somone could lay out the next steps I have in front of me. I've done a lot of research on the website and have a rough idea of where to go, but i find these message boards extremely helpful.

Thanks alot,

As you are already well into your senior year, you are a bit behind with the process for the 2011 cycle....not impossible, but behind.

I would suggest the following:

You need to be designated an official candidate, which occurs after your peliminary application is completed (which you have stated it is). You did not mention how long ago you submitted it; if it has been any substantial amount of time I would suggest calling the admissions office and checking on it; if it was submitted just recently then hold tight.

While you are waiting for your candidate number, suggest you find out who is your BGO (Blue and Gold Officer) and contact him/her immediately.

Go on line and download the applications from your nomination sources. I am assuming you are from NY....you can download Hillary Clintons application directly from her web site; for Schumer you will need to send in a request to his office- they will send back an application. The VP nomination (letter) can be directly downloaded from Cheney's site. Find out who your MOC is and do the same with that application. Do it all this weekend. Keep in mind the deadlines for them are as early as October 15th...not postmarked, mind you, but in their office. So get going.

Get your recommendation packets ready to go so that when your candidate number comes through you can distribute your packets out immediately. Prep a packet for your math and english teacher. Perhaps a coach. For each MOC you are seeking a nomination from. While these packets are "optional," they can help remind your recommenders of key points (going to such a small school may deem them unnecessary). If you opt to do this, include your athletic and activity CVs (see #5), a copy of your personal essay (#6) and an addressed envelope to where it has to go (the USNA ones will be done on line)

5. Put together an athletic and activity CV. Give a copy of both to your BGO and MOCs. Send your athletic one to any coach at USNA if you want to be considered for sports there.

6. Write your personal essay for USNA. 500 words, no more, no less. Make each one count. Revise it to fit the essays reqested for your MOC (ie: Clinton allows 350 words, Schumer 250 and completely optional). THIS COULD HAVE CHANGED since the last admissions cycle....so make sure you check what each MOC wants and what their deadlines are. Do that this weekend.

7. As soon as you get your candide number, the very next call (besides to your BGO) needs to be to DoDMERB. You need to get moving on your physical, so do not delay. You will want to have time to address any deficiencies that might crop up,so get that done ASAP. Dont' get hung up on your eyesight unless they tell you it is a problem. A good idea at this point would be to look on the DoDMERB site and check out the disqualifiers for any conditons that might prevent you from being qualified.

8. Retake the SATs again if you think you can score higher. That is a decision only you can make.

9. Visit the USNA. Attend an information session. Take the tour. Talk to the Mids on the yard.

10. Don't waste another minute of time. Make sure you have other college applications in the works.

Please keep in mind that while you have until January to get your applicaiton in for USNA, the MOC deadlines come much, much earlier. So you really have to get going.

(ps...for the USNA, you are applying for 2011....not 007! ;) )

Best of luck!

This just keeps getting better.

Cue James Bond music, please! :D

Either that or ...
"Mission Possible!" :)

Thank you very much navy2010 your advice was very helpful. Can anyone tell me If I have a reasonable shot at admisson? This is pretty random, but do you ever get to jump out of planes at usna? Lets say I want a billet to attempt BUDS would my summer activities differ from someone entering submarine stuff?

With or without a parachute? :D Just kidding!

During the summer, you can attend jump school at Fort Benning if it fits in with your summer training schedule.

At the risk of sounding flippant, I suggest you apply and find out for real. I say this simply because what may be a good set of credentials one year may not be so great the next. Your profile looks good enough to have a decent shot, IMO.

BTW, what private school in NYC are you in? I went to Garden School in Jackson Heights after two years at Xavier down on 14th St. and Avenue of the Americas. :)

First step is to go to the web sites of your senators and member of Congress. A quick check of the senators' web sites shows that their nomination applications are due by November 1st. That only gives you about 5 weeks to get everything together. Print up their nomination packets and follow the steps EXACTLY. It is a time-consuming process and requires pieces from a number of people. You will need to get busy.

Good luck!

^^^^^
Take note DVD: Senator Clinton wants your paperwork IN her office by the stated date....not just postmarked! So allow yourself 2 full weeks ahead of time to make sure it gets there....ditto for Senator Schumer.

Best of luck!

Zaphod I go to Calhoun on the upper west side in New York. We actually just played you guys(garden) in soccer yesterday. I almost went to xavier but I wasn't liking the all boys things and didn't want to commute.

And thanks to everyone for offering advice because it definlety helped. I'm really excited to apply and hopefully get in.

It really is a small world! How'd my beloved Griffins do?

I can attest that the commute to Xavier seriously sucked. I came all the way from Main Street in Flushing. A bus and two trains...... ONE WAY. OY!

It was a great game, however we ended up winning in the last five minutes 4-3. Yeah I was considering Xavier mainly because they had football, but it just wasn't enough to make me go there. Playing basketball at garden is also horrible, was your gym the same small tin box they have now. The half court line is practically on top of the three point line.

Yep. I remember it well.

Try playing softball on a blacktop. ;)

Summer training at like Jump School, Dive School, and Air Assault school are extremely competive. A screener comes to the academy in I think November and conducts a weeding out process of extreme PT. They only take something like 4-5 plebes per school.

Wow. Looks like they've tightened the standards quite a bit.

Unless things have changed, they have a sky diving club at Navy. You can do non-military jumps on most weekends.
