1 day in and not feelin in

Recently transfered from my local community college to the local 4 year public university. After my first day today I know I'm not gonna be happy here. The school is in a pretty rough neighborhood and I just dont feel comfortable going out once its dark. I have no problem with my roommate, hes a good kid along with the others in my apartment. I just dont feel like im in college yet...maybe it will change once classes start. Has anybody else felt this way before? by the way..this is the heroin capital of the state. I just dont seeing it getting any better..

Damn! One day in and you aren’t feelin’ it?

Give it a chance. If you walk in there thinking that you will not like it, then chances are, you aren’t going to like it!

If you have fears about your personal safety, many campuses have free escort services or ride services to get students safely to their destinations, particularly after dark. My kids have used them and we highly recommend them.

We also encouraged our kids to find out what campus has to offer & get involved in whatever sounds interesting–helping plan activities for your apartment, student government, clubs, part-time job, there are lots of options. Good luck–it can take a bit of time, but you should start exploring and meeting some interesting people, with and w/o your friends & room mates.

It’s only been one day. There’s no possible way you can judge a school that quickly. Like PrincessBride said, give it a chance and have a good attitude about it. It seems as though you’ve already got this idea in your head that where you’re at is some awful place. It might be, I don’t know. But you can’t make snap judgments like that. If the school and surrounding area was really that bad, there wouldn’t be any students.

I agree with many of the other posters - a new school can take some adjustment time. When you start classes, it may get better - you’ll meet new people and be busier. Meeting other students can also help you socially, because you can ask them advice about going places/safety. It’s only day one - just keep your head up and be optimistic about it! If you think you won’t like it, chances are that you probably won’t.

Livingoxymoron you’re right. This school was not my first choice. I was just sick of my community college and wanted to move on…unfortunately my parents told me either I go to this school closer to home or I take one more semester at community college then go to the school further away. I wanted to experience the dorm life so I figured I’d try a semester at this local university and then transfer to one of the schools I got into unless I like it here. I think it will get better when the weather changes.
