I’m going to transfer to either UTA or Texas A&M Commerce in the fall for industrial engineering as a sophmore.
I looked at the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s employment change a while back and it said 4% change. They just updated it and it’s now 1% change. It’s still 2,100 jobs, but 1% change sounds deplorable. I then looked up industrial engineering jobs on engineeringjobs.com and there were less than 400 jobs in all of Texas. Should I be worried about employment? Should I major in something different?
I wouldn’t worry about 4% or 1%.
About 100,000 Bachelor’s degrees in engineering are awarded each year. About 24,000 are Mechanical, anther 12,000 are Civil and electrical. Only about 5,000 are Industrial/Manufacturing/System degrees (about 5% of all engineering BS degrees awarded). You see much fewer posting for ISE jobs than the more popular engineering fields, but then their will be fewer competitors. In general, it all equals out.
ISE is also a very wide major/field, many jobs may not show up in that website, and may appear with “different titles”.
I just ran a quick search on engineeringjobs.com and there didn’t seem to be any shortage of posts for Texas.
Chill about the job prospects. Just concentrate on your coursework and co-op/inership opportunities. (I’m a MechE, and DS is ECE … but I’ve read a lot about IE on these threads - I bet you’ll do fine.)
@Gator88NE Thanks for explaining it to me!
@eyemgh I guess maybe I’m not used to looking at real jobs then. So 400 jobs is a lot? I looked at ME and there were a lot more. But you’d know better than me! Thanks.
@colorado_mom Thanks!
