Although the politician was initially very sensitive to be criticized by the press, he quickly became more confident about responding to reporters' sometimes pointed questions.

the answer is B, "be criticized" and its supposed to be "being criticized", but i don't understand...
1. why that is
2. why it isn't "criticism"

THANKS =D

be criticized is a verb… he is sensitive to the act of being criticized by the press, thus theat has to be a noun… being is a gerund (which is a noun), so that fits much better

think of it this way — “Although the politician was initially very sensitive to the criticism of [not by] the press, he quickly became more confident about responding to reporters’ sometimes pointed questions.”

it is grammatically sound to have a noun there (such as ‘‘being’’ criticized) versus a verb phrase (such as be criticized)

But criticism works as well and I believe is better. But this is why you just have to point out the error, not give suggestions. :)

who gives a hoot…just identify the error…no need to correct it.

note it can’t be criticism. As peytoncline pointed out, it would have to be criticism OF or FROM, but you can’t correct that. That actually sounds like an alternate question.
