1 Year Computer Science Transfer Student to USC, UW Madison, or Georgia Tech

I am a freshman attending a California community college(Las Positas College). I am planning on transferring after 1 year.

I am currently taking:
CS31- Java Programming- 4 units
CS1- Computing Fundamentals I- 4 units
English 1A- Freshman English- 3 units
Math 2- Integral Calculus- 5 units

Next Semester I will be taking 2 classes at Las Positas College
ENG7- Critical Thinking/Writing- 3 units
Math3- Multivariable Calculus- 5 units

And 2 classes at Diablo Valley College because Las Positas doesn’t have them:
Chem 120- General College Chem I- 5 units
BIOSC 131- Organismal Biology- 5 units

I have a 4.0 GPA this semester and don’t see that changing. I went to a competitive high school so I am used to a college workload.

AP’s:
AP Bio-4
AP Comp Sci A-5
AP Calc BC-5
AP Gov and Politics-3
AP Macroeconomics-4

My SAT is a 1470:
800 on the math section and 670 on the English section

EC’s:

  1. I am doing an independent study with my cs professor learning basic cryptography
  2. I taught a course in computer programming to underprivileged kids at an elementary school in my district
  3. I am a member of the honor society, Math honor society, and CS club at my college
  4. Paid SAT Math and high school math tutor for 5 clients

Not sure if it matters but high school EC’s:
Officer of the CS club
Officer of Nanoseed, a volunteering club that raised funds for Chinese farmers
3 varsity sports: Soccer, Lacrosse, and Water Polo
Paid math tutor for two clients
2 volunteering mission trips to build houses in Mexico

I am a white male in case thats important

Thanks for any feedback!

If you will be a sophomore transfer, your high school record will also be significant. High school record is less important or not important for junior transfers who have a substantial college record.

Also, why are you repeating (your AP credit for) biology instead of taking physics that is required for CS majors at some schools?

Can you afford each of your targets, according to their net price calculators?

Thank you for your response. I will be a sophomore transfer, but I will also have 34 college credits and around 16 AP credits putting me at 50 credits. I am hoping because my credit count is so high they won’t look at my high school too much. However, my high school isn’t too bad with a 3.92 weighted GPA. I am not taking Physics because it isn’t required for the schools I will be applying to. And yes I can afford the schools I am applying to as my parents having been putting money aside for a while to help me pay for it.

3.92 weighted GPA is from what unweighted GPA? 2.92?

GT requires three science courses, including at least one physics course, for the CS major: https://www.cc.gatech.edu/future/undergraduates/bscs/corereq

Note also that you may get less credit for AP scores because some of it is duplicated by your college courses (e.g. part of calculus BC and part of biology). Colleges also vary in how much credit they give for AP scores.

CS is an impacted major and so I think it would be wise to add some safeties to your list - safe UC’s, CSU’s? To be able to finish a CS major on time, you will need to transfer in your sophomore year since CC’s do not offer many of the CS courses needed , or if they do , they may not all transfer. Also look into ASU, UofA - may be more transfer friendly and have good CS departments.
