10% Asian population @ Amherst?

Are asians considered URMs here ?

No. Asians are not considered URMS anywhere.

What does URM mean??

I don't know if they're considered URM's, but my friend who is Chinese did receive an invitation to that Diversity Day (I'm not sure if that is what it's called...)event at Amherst.

Under Represented Minority. Do a lot of Asian consider and apply to small Liberal Arts Colleges? They usually go to comparative large Universities.

It depends on the school. Some LAC's, like Swarthmore and Wellesley in particular have a much higher percentage of Asian students (in the ballpark of 25%, I think). Those LAC's for whatever reason, tend to appeal to Asian applicants more.

The question: Do Asians mostly apply to larger universities?

It depends on whether you are talking about Asian-Americans or international Asians. Those who have been raised in the US know the reputation of the various schools - and Amherst is near the top. Excellent students apply to Amherst. Internationally, however, Amherst is not well known, and so perhaps fewer qualified Asians apply.

Even though Asians are a minority in the US, they are not URM because they attend college at a rate higher than their proportion of the population. African-Americans and Hispanics/Latinos attend at a lower rate compared to their percentage of the population, and are therefore underrepresented.

Internationals are not considered URM. They are in a separate admissions category.

im a "non excellent" asian raised in so cal that applied to amherst

I'm Asian, too. However, my brain is not as smart as those of ASIANS

haha, ditto
