What would you say are some of the best schools for an aspiring sports journalist?

Syracuse and Northwestern immediately come to mind.

Missouri is widely considered the #1 journalism school. The journalism program also permits an emphasis in sports journalism.[Sports Journalism - Missouri School of Journalism](Sports Journalism – Missouri School of Journalism)

Also, check out U Iowa. It has a decent journalism school. Also there is an American Studies program that has a thematic option in Sports. Big 10 sports is icing on the cake.

You might check U Nebraska. The journalism program is decent and UNL is now in the Big 10. I’ve done a lot of traveliing in the area recently and occasionally I’ve happened on the local paper, The Lincoln Journal-Star. It has perhaps the best college sports coverage I’ve seen in a long time—very extensive for all sports, both men’s and woman’s teams. I don’t know if students get to do any internships there, but it would be worth checking out.

The journalism school at U Oklahoma might be worth a look. I’m told they have great facilities. Also, it a big sports school.
Indiana U has a good journalism school. It’s also a Big 10 school—basketball is big, of course, football, not so much. There’s also a lot of interest in so-called minor sports—track, swimming, cycling, etc.

IU also has a School of Health, PE, & Recreation with an extensive range programs including sports communication, both print and broadcast. http://www.hper.indiana.edu/degrees/sportbroadcast.shtml

Ohio University has a good journalism program and one of the premier sportswriters is an alum (Peter King).

@Gadad, My mom is actually a sports journalist and she went to Northwestern. : )

Northwestern and Syracuse have the most alums in sports journalism (both print and other media).

As an aside, articles written by sports journalists for The Daily Northwestern have been appearing in the sports section for NYTimes.com.

^ Evidence about NW and Syracuse numbers?
