Can I ask what did people who applied or is planning to apply to JHU wrote (or is writing) about the 10 dollar essay? I kind of went out of my way and got creative with it, and basically said that id use that $10 to join this scholarship and ended up making a duct tape dress (which i did made) for the essay.
also i have a reccomendation from a professor/vice dean research/head of a bunch of labs that is my research mentor (he's kind of well-known in the research area at hopkins), how much do u think that helps? and how much does the siemens westinghouse semifinalist help? (not asking for my chances, just asking if you think it'd help, and if so, how much or how little)?

did you apply ED or are you applying RD?

i applied ED, oh and i forgot, im gonna get published (in a journal) in the spring or over winter break

what journal

i applied ED. i wrote on how i took my mother to the zoo in remembrance of the times we used to spend there during my childhood, sketching all the animals that we felt familiar with. i still dunno how they're gonna take it. i really am not expecting an acceptance.

I'm not really expecting to get in either. I wrote about a trip to uc berkeley and going into museums and telegraph avenue. So cliche since EVERYONE goes to museum's. sigh I wanted to write an essay about cooking dinner for my parents but some didnt like it.

In anycase, we have to have faith in ourselves and the universities we're applying to, otherwise we'll never get in.

"I'm not really expecting to get in either." hahaha. What if I wrote somewhere in my essays that my most defining trait is hypocrisy? That's unique, they'll have to let me in for sure! too bad I applied ED though

ahaha hypocrisy? well thats the reason why i asked about what others wrote, becuse that essay is a very hard one to write, my friend decided to write a narrative poem or story or soemthing. anyways arseus and soymilk, if u applied, u have to have SOME faith of getting in right? its only a lil more than a week away
jhu09, im not sure what journal it is yet, i just know i am getting published in the spring or sometime earlier

JHU is a research university. Siemens semi-finalist is +++++. Any thing to do with research is a good.

As to my $10.00 essays. I wrote about how I would spend it in India, where I lived for most of my life....and had a nice ending!

nguyent:

Are you applying to their Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program.

yay i was a Siemens semi :)...i applied to WWURFP too!! check out my post, i feel so unloved lol (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=12553)

As for the OP, without seeing your stats its hard to say, but my advice would be just let your personality come through in the 10$ essay. Im sure they know its a tough question and they are just looking for a creative response. I personally wrote a wild adventure in Washington.

wow chicago, i wish id gone to india (or anywhere out of US, well ive been to vietnam) chicago, yea im applying to that, or well i meant i appliED cause i applied ed to jhu (hope i get it)
oh and thanks for posting everyone

Hey guys, whats up? It's my first time posting on the Hopkins board, but it's my number one choice and I really hope I get in. Unfortunately, I didn't do ED because of finanical reasons (ie the parentals want to compare offers). Anyway, I tried to take an original route that the admissions people will either love or just laugh at. I performed with my rap group, E-12, at a school charity for kids with facial deformities (Operation Smile) and put the $10 under my bandanna as a kind of prop. It was really funny, because most people would NEVER expect to see the nerd guy get up on the stage and start rapping. People were even singing our songs in school the next day! I recorded my performance, and I'm sending it in along with some background on how the band started and the script for the performance. It's just crazy enough to work...

yea i said that i would spend my ten bucks and go play laser tag (which might be true if i was in a weird mood) and other dumb stuff like that. So, in other words, ill be expecting that rejection when it comes tomorrow.

I would suggest not making up an adventure that is too fantastical or unrealistic. Yes, they are looking for creativity, but everyone with a bit of an imagination can come up with an outrageous plan.

I think they want an essay that is genuine and unpretentious. It's important to let your character show in the essay in an intelligent and subtle way.

how long is/was ur essay?
