I just got my schedule for college next year and I have a class that occurs 10 minutes after my calc class. The campus I am on is fairly small but I am worried about a class going over the allotted time, should I try to reschedule or should I be fine?

If campus is nearby, go try walking it. Does 10 minutes feel like enough to get from one to the other?

If it looks like it’s close enough to get to class on time, I wouldn’t worry about it. Some of the buildings on my campus are 20+ minutes apart, and that’s pretty hard to do in 10 minutes. Otherwise it’s generally not an issue, most classes end on time, and teachers are generally understanding if students are a couple minutes late (though that might not be the case everywhere).

Of course, if you’re able to reschedule it pretty easily, there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of a break between classes.

As long as you can walk from one to the next you’ll be fine. College isn’t like high school, there’s no bell that goes off at start time and if you’re not in your seat you get detention. Just don’t show up any later than five minutes to a class, it’s rude to disrupt lecture as you noisily come into the room and get all your stuff together.

And you are also free to leave a class at any time.

However, some teachers, especially for freshmen-level classes, are strict on attendance. This is mainly an issue with non-STEM classes.

Good post, I am sure that you enjoy your 10min distant for college.

Obviously it depends how far apart the two classes are…

Anyway, keep in mind that sometimes the first one may go over a bit or you might want to get to the second one early for a whatever reason (midterm, professor starts early, etc.) I have a ten minute break between two classes this quarter, and it’s about a 10 minute walk between them. Today I had a midterm in both and it was really stressful trying to finish my one midterm early to get to my other class.

Just make sure the walk isn’t more than around 5-6 minute and you should be fine. If it’s more than that, you may run into slight problems occasionally.

I once had an average of probably 7 minutes to walk half a mile from one class to the next. I thought it would be hell but I actually really enjoyed it; I don’t like to sit down for long stretches and the very fast walk between hour-long classes was just what I needed.

Actually, in the previous quarter, I had a lab section that overlapped with the second hour of another lecture once per week. I found that the material I missed each week was surprisingly insignificant and I easily made up for it in the weekly TA-led discussion section and by reviewing the class a few times during the term with other students.

This semester I had about 5 minutes between my chem lecture and my chem lab…and they were on opposite sides of the school and 2 floors apart. It’s a smaller community college, but I still had to book it up there. I’ve only got 15 minutes between my humanities class and my english class too, which are also basically on opposite sides of the school. It’s adequate enough time to get between the two and still have a few minutes worth of relaxing.

This fall I think I’m going to have about 10 minutes between calculus and physics. Just walk it out and see how long it takes. College professors are pretty punctual about letting you out on time in my experience. Even if they haven’t dismissed the class yet, there’s no reason that you can’t just leave a minute or two early. I can understand why one wouldn’t want to do that though. I don’t like to miss any material in any of my classes.
