I am currently a junior in Oregon. My family and I will be moving to Austin,Texas next year. If my weighted GPA is 4.21 and my unweighted GPA is 4.0, will I have a chance to get into UT Austin engineering. By the way, I was overseas freshman year so, I only received Passing grades. Please tell me the high schools where I will be in the top 8 percent.
You have some issues to be aware of:
- I am not clear on what you mean by moving to Texas "next year." If you mean before you start senior year in high school, you can likely qualify to start college in UTexas paying resident rather than out-of-state tuition. But if you mean later than that be aware that your parents need to be residents of Texas for at least a year before you can qualify to pay in-state tuition, meaning your family needs to move to Texas by this summer to be able pay in-state tuition for the Fall 2016 semester.
- The 10% class rank admission rule applies to Texas public universities other than UTexas which has a special rule which can vary annually and is currently top 7% although it wil be top 8% for freshman class of 2016. It results in admission to the univerisity regardless of test scores but it does not guarantee any admission to any particular program such as engineering and engineering generally has higher stats (rank and test scores) than the university as a whole.
- That automatic admission rule applies to students having the particular class rank from a Texas high school. You do not have that and unless the high school you will attend in Texas will provide a class rank to you when you start senior year based on your grades from Oregon (that is something you have to check with the new high school), you will not have it at the time you apply for admission and thus may not be covered by the automatic admission rule when you apply in Fall of this year, meaning your application will be considered for the about 25% of seats that go to those other than the automatic admits.
