100% Offer Acceptance at UMich this year

I understand that all 25 of the 25 students (24 incoming freshman and 1 transfer) that were offerred admission into UMich MT this spring accepted their offers this year, which evidently is extremely rare–maybe even unprecedented. Sounds like it’s going to be a crowded, but dedicated class of talented students starting there this fall. The leadership of the MT program must be doing something right to attract every one of their top recruits. Any wisdom from older students in the program? I’d like to think this is a good sign, but it also seems like the competition for performance roles is going to be especially fierce–even though I know the faculty works hard to minimize negative competitiveness, one of the things we really liked about the program.

CalDad3 congratulations and welcome to the UMich MT family!! Wow! Such exciting news! I beleive this happened a few years back as well, but not sure. My daughter will be a junior next year and has absolutely loved it! She had some great choices, but has never regretted her decision to attend Michigan.
As far as performance opportunities, I would not be overly concerned, as a sophomore my daughter was in two main performances and also had great experiences in two other student directed projects. There are often students away studying abroad ( three juniors next fall that I know of) this decreases the available students to cast. The faculty is wonderful at creating an atmosphere of excelling for yourself and limiting negative feelings. The students become quite close and are overall very supportive of one another.
I know in the past two years, very few freshman girls get cast second semester, but the boys are typically cast as second semester freshman, simply more parts for guys. This year they also added some wonderful caberet nights to highlight some of the students not cast in mainstage productions. There is also Musket and Basement Arts…plenty to stay busy!
Again, congratulation and welcome! :)

CalDad, a parent of a Mich MT student told me the other day that an accepted student turned down Mich for NYU/Tisch. I could have it wrong but I recall this person saying that. Cannot prove it. In any case, top colleges, and in this case, top MT programs, tend to have very high yields. I do recall UMich having a large class (about 28) a while back…might have been the class of '07 or around there.

You’re right, Soozie - it was the Class of '07, and 29 of 30 accepted their offers of admission. They wrote a song about it called “Biggest Class Ever”, which I think you can still see on YouTube. By the time they graduated, there had been some attrition and a few people graduated a year late for various reasons (a tour, time abroad), and they showcased 23. (2 of those who didn’t showcase were Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who graduated a semester early and were already off beginning their writing careers.)

@soozievt, It’s not scientific, but according to my son’s participation in their private Class of 2015 Facebook page all 25 of the offers were accepted and the students are all on board. I definitely see it as a positive indication that the students are all going to be passionate and excited about starting this fall. Of course I’m sure that’s true with every MT program. My son is so ready to be done with high school and get to college he’s about to explode. And we’re excited for him! I certainly wasn’t that thrilled about getting to college way back when. :-)
