100 point increase in writing - how does it look?

I have always been a good writer and I consider writing to be my best subject, so it was a low blow when I received my June SAT scores back and received a 630 on the Writing section with an essay score of 6. (I'm terrible at pressure writes :() I also received a 600 on Math and 660 on CR.

However, when I retook the SAT this past November, my Writing score jumped to 730 with an essay score of 8. I missed only 2 multiple choice questions, so a higher essay score would've put me at 760, 780, even 800... bummer. But my CR + Math score stayed pretty much the same.

How do you think colleges would view this increase? My superscored SAT is 2020, but my CR + M is only 1290 at the highest. I'm just curious because I haven't heard of too many people jumping so high in just one area.

Colleges tend to look more towards your Math and Critical Reading during the admissions process, but the jump in Writing certainly isn’t going to hurt you.

Um. Colleges would view the increase for what it is – a better score in one specific SAT section. That’s a good thing, right?

I know lots of students who have experienced improvements far greater than 100 points on one section from one SAT test to the next. FYI, “large” score improvements will trigger red flags in the College Board system which may lead to investigations into the cause of the increase. In the vast majority of cases, a 100-point increase doesn’t trigger such flags.

Congrats on the score increase!

How exactly would these investigations be carried out? I don’t understand why red flags would be triggered simply because of score improvements. Aren’t score improvements normal?

well some colleges only look at cr and m. so not that great of a thing

Okay, good! I was worried that colleges might be suspicious or something. Especially since my critical reading actually went down.

And yeah. CR, M, and Writing score helps me a lot for some colleges, but my CR + M alone doesn’t do much
