So I have been asked to write an entrance exam of 100 words with the subject being about the events that have influenced my choice of nursing as a career. Only 100 words. There is so much more that I could write, but I would like to say something along the lines of the moments I would help others.
I’ll be frank with you. A 100 word essay requirement is simply a made up exercise to appear serious or to mimic other applications. There’s nothing you nor anyone nor any past, present and future applicant – can write in those 100-words that will have any bearing as long as it’s half reasonable (few typos, decent grammar, don’t curse or be a bigot).
You have basically a short paragraph. Part of the difficulty is in saying something meaningful with few words. IMO it is best to pick one reason you decided to become a nurse and discuss it.
I think you could either do what happy1 suggested above, or list off all the main reasons you’re interested in the program with a little explanation for each if you have enough room.
I disagree that a 100 word essay is a made up exercise. 100 words isn’t that small an amount. They are probably most interested in what event you choose and want to give you some space to explain it while not requiring you to write in excruciating detail. This is the reason why I would lean towards happy1’s suggestion over thatrunnerkid’s because I believe trying to address multiple events in only 100 words will result in a shallow essay. Speaking clearly and succinctly are important skills for nurses so they want to see you do it. This is 100 words.
I think it is real too. Tufts has a couple of 100 word essays, as does Columbia and Brown off the top of my head. D worked on each one. You could do a variation, say while there are many reasons I want to be a nurse, what drives me is that.
