  1. Not only is there a building called the Lawrence Hall of science, there is a physics professor whose name is Lawrence Hall.
  1. The hidden swings with the most amazing views
  1. Speaking of things called Lawrence, the Lawrence Berkeley labs just up the hill have opportunities for research for students.

Let’s make that

  1. okay, maybe the football team could be better but there's usually a bunch of Olympic -level swimmers
  2. also if you like sports, the Golden State Warriors are local
  1. Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing offers boot camps, seminars, and chances of meeting scholars all over the world. According to my D, who is currently a CS PhD student at Cal and frequently visits Simons, it offers many opportunities for research. It's much better than trying to get a research job from a professor teaching your class, who may have one research assistant position and 100 candidates. In a seminar at Simons, there may be 10 professors in the audience. Even only a few of them have openings for research assistant, the odds are much better.

My D, during the very first summer at Cal as an undergrad, got her research assistant job by talking to a presenter at a Simons bootcamp, who did not have need for undergrad research assistants, but introduced her to one of his colleagues who did. She kept that RA position (with decent pay) until graduating.

  1. Chemistry is ranked the best in thew world. The chemical engineering is ranked #2 nationwide
  1. Many top Bay Area employers in biotech and computing are full of Cal grads and recruit new hires at Berkeley.
  1. Cal Performances brings top names in music, dance, and theater right to campus at great prices for students.
  2. Downtown San Francisco is only about 20 minutes away by BART for more performing arts opportunities such as Broadway touring musicals like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hanson.

These 101 things always turn out too cheesy without few real reasons to go. But I don’t care. I’m adding to it.
67. Clark Kerr has on average one lawn/garden per building.

  1. Cafe Messo has the most amazing salads - must order with poppy seed dressing- and the bread is awesome too!
  2. Freight and Salvage on Shattuck is a hidden gem for lovers of a wide array of music genre and it is very inexpensive.
  3. Close to Bart, a public transportation system that really works . . just be careful were you sit.

Terminator here.

  1. Campanile - taller than Hoover tower, looking a lot better than Hoover tower.
  2. Direct view of the Golden Gate Bridge from Campanile
  3. The Big C - a quick hike on a Sunday afternoon before getting dinner and enjoying the sunset
  4. Fire Trail/Claremont Canyon - a longer hike with a group of friends
  5. Lake Anza - hidden picnic destination that is actually reachable by 65/67 bus.
  6. Indian Rock - less hidden than Lake Anza, but still not appreciated enough, especially when you come right at sunrise.
  7. Rose Garden - highly recommended date course
  8. La Val's pizza and La Burrita - just the place to visit after a enjoyable date walk at the Rose Garden - in all seriousness though, while other venues have come and gone, these places still stay which says a lot.
  9. The top floor balcony at McCone Hall - bet you didn't know this is also a good place for sunset and just sit down with someone.
  10. Gypsy's - only when I'm really hungry, and it's for a good reason once you look at the portion of their calzone.
  11. GBC - do they sell fried chicken tenders anymore? It was my 'good luck charm' before exams.
  12. Clark Kerr dining on weekend brunch - let me tell you how much I liked it: I came there every single weekend for 4 years.
  13. Top floor of Wurster Hall - almost impossible to get into if you're outside of Arch and the related major, but the view is worth it
  14. Breakfast at the Faculty Club - if I get married, it's gonna be here with Cal Band playing the fight song.
  15. Pressbox at the Memorial Stadium - or here, although it's pricier.
  16. Berkeley Bowl - sounds like one of random local grocery stores, but it's legit enough to show as one of the accepted venues for 5% cash back for groceries for Chase Freedom. You won't find a better assortment of local groceries at other towns imo.
  17. Finfine - Ethiopian restaurant that you must try with a group, utensil-free, and everyone reaching for the injera
  18. Cheeseboard - did somebody already mention this? How about walking across the street and eat at the top floor of 'Gourmet Ghetto'? Also, great date spot.
  19. Don't forget to stop by Lush Gelato in the same shop after you're done
  20. Boba tea, any venue - perfect go-to place after you barely survived through a boring lecture and you need an emergency juice to wake up, or just go.
  21. Tang Center - most students will end up waiving it, but I can strongly recommend their counseling service and come out as a better person.
  22. Links in the career center website that lists where graduated students each year for each major - for those who respond to the survey, it lists the companies, the salary, or the grad school. I thought it gave me some sense of comfort that people are going out doing great things and I can be part of it.
  23. Mock interviews at the career fair center - if it wasn't for this which gave all the right criticisms and skills to improve, then I probably wouldn't have gotten my job.
  24. Numerous career fairs with so many good companies - it's actually an embarrassment of riches - great companies, and even more great candidates.
  25. Financial diversity - it's not like some private schools where you have mostly middle-class to wealthy folks, but students who have full-time jobs, first-gen college students, etc. - you learn quite a lot from them
  26. No affirmative action - I'm personally a big fan of selecting students based solely on qualifications even if it means breaking that semi-magical '25% Asian' ratio you see in ivy leagues.
  27. No 'weak' major - every major is a legitimate case for top-10 in the country, and we have all the majors. Perhaps the only other school that comes kinda close is the Farm across the bay, but we study harder.
  28. Not afraid of life - even if some difficulties come at life after college, when I think how much more struggle I had to go through while in Berkeley, there's really nothing that's stopping me or refuse any challenges. There's this second-nature mentality of 'figure it out' rather than avoiding it.
  29. Cal Band Great! When you happen to walk by Sproul Hall on Friday at noon during fall season, you will hear their halftime show for Saturday football game and whatever mood you were in, you will be in a lot more cheerful mode after their concert. You gotta appreciate these guys who are doing this without credit or pay but they're doing it just because they like it, and they put so much effort into it.
  30. Did you know that when the band finishes its halftime show, the announcer says 'The University of California Marching Band!!' without mentioning Berkeley or Cal? We are the original University of California.

Wasn’t quite sure where to put this, but adding on to reasons, Professor Jelani Nelson will be joining the EECS faculty at Berkeley in the fall. He’s teaching at Harvard now, a leading researcher in big data and Computational algorithms.
