<p>Anecdotes: D is currently a soph. Last year, after her freshman year, she got a well-paying summer internship working for a corporation headed by a Yale alum. This year, she has been accepted to an internship directly related to her area of study. It is unpaid, and in fact requires her to pay her transportation to The Ends of the Earth, and to pay all of her expenses while in the 6-8 week program. Estimated cost: $4000. After careful consideration, we decided to help her pay for this, along with her contribution from last summer’s earnings. She had discussed this opportunity with her Yale advisor last week. Today, out of the blue, her advisor called her in to tell her that the department would be picking up the complete tab for her summer internship. No application, no red tape, just a prof who can make things happen, and a school that wants students to be out in the world, learning and leading. This isn’t an unusual story at Yale, but rather more the norm.</p>

<p>Son had a paid on-campus research internship (part of his admissions package) the summer after this freshman year. He had international research fellowships the summers after his sophomore and junior years - all generously funded by Yale. </p>

<p>Here’s the kicker - he even received an international research fellowship from Yale to use the year AFTER graduation. The fellowship (had son accepted it) would have paid for a full year’s expenses.</p>

<p>… which allows students to actually do something. Each year son and friends would take a two-week cultural exchange trip (Europe, South America, Middle East, Asia, etc.)</p>
