101 Reasons to Go to Vanderbilt

As a prospective student interested in the university I was wondering what are some interesting and unique things (that maybe aren't in the brochures or on the websites) that would draw a prospective student to go the Vanderbilt.

lol i was looking for this. Vandy is #7 choice right now so yeah im rly interested.

Responding as the parent of a 2009 grad. Some of these are on the website/in the brochures, but my d found they applied to her in a very personal way

The faculty is fully engaged in undergrad teaching and mentoring. My d’s professors went beyond her expectations in responsiveness and personal contact with her and her classmates. She was never disappointed in this aspect of Vanderbilt.

Many opportunities for service and leadership. The brochures all mention this, and my d found it absolutely true. The Alternative Spring Break program was created at Vandy and is a big deal there. It’s competitive, so if you want to participate, you need to be aware of deadlines and write a strong application. But there are many other possibilities there.

The administration is on top of its game. When my d was applying for post-grad programs, she found resources to count on and considerable support, from mentors and staff.

The student body is a great asset. I’ll always remember how happy she was to tell me, as a freshman, “Everyone’s smart here!” As she went through school, she found that, while there was a segment of the student body that did fit the Vandy stereotype, it was far more diverse than she’d expected.

Nashville is just a great town. Of course the brochures mention this too, because it’s true.

whats the Vandy stereotype? over here in india it is “ppl in cowboy hats studying agriculture”
yes i know that is wrong and offensive and i dont believe in it (not anymore atleast) but what are Vandy ppl thought to be?

“People in cowboy hats studying agriculture” - wow, that’s an interesting misconception given that Vanderbilt has no involvement in agriculture. You might find this list interesting. Personally I love that Vandy is getting some love via Willie Geist’s rise to a more prominent position at NBC. He tweets about VU regularly. [List of Vanderbilt University people - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](List of Vanderbilt University people - Wikipedia)

well here (well at least among the ppl i know), schools are generally known by USNews, location, Ivy League or not.
so basically, UMiami is a beach, GW is the President’s lounge, NYU is Times Square, Boston University is Harvard, Vandy is ppl in cowboy hats studying agriculture and Michigan is cold. lol

I am the parent of a 2011 grad. She was able to indulge her love of music while getting a stellar academic degree. She fulfilled her AXLE requirements with history of music classes, took a business of music class, served on the Music Group board, had a radio show featuring unsigned Nashville artists, was part of MTV-U, and interned at an independent label and a music management company. She indulged her love of volunteering by continuing her relationship with Habitat for Humanity … she was on the steering committee of our area’s high school Habitat group, and she started a Habitat group at her own high school. At Vandy, she began by volunteering with VU’s group, and she ended up on the board as coordinator of site selection and volunteer selection/training. She majored in Medicine, Health and Society & was able to take relevant courses in a study abroad, as well as complete a paid summer research internship with a Vandy professor. She got to know her profs because that is what happens at Vandy … she ran into one particular professor at several concerts. She had an eclectic group of friends … including African Americans, Muslims, and gay students. They took advantage of the many concerts in the area (including several great free concerts featuring well-known artists - always a bonus for a college student!). In other words, Vandy is a place where a student can get a great education, be a part of the campus community, and find things to do outside school, as well.

Heh. Not very much, other than “Nashville is a great town.” And a pretty campus. I guess all the students are smart is true (32/34 ACT). Interesting that there was nothing else that anyone could come up with, at last that is not available at a thousand other US campuses.

 1. The ONLY US university ranked # 1 for the happiest students in the country. (According to student surveys with the Princeton Revue) Unfortunately many other top 20 U's have unhappy students.
 2. One of the highest "quality of life scores" in the US. Again, this is according to current student surveys with PR. Unfortunately students at many other top 20 U's report a low quality of life.
 3. World class hospital on campus
 4. Option for Greek or residential housing involvement
 5. Most selective U in the southeast
 6. More merit $$ than most top 20's
 7. Music city
 8. Graduates most students in 4 years
