you could just have the Tv delivered. My boyfriend just had a mini fridge delivered to him at his school.

Bestbuy.com has free shipping, no matter what you buy. That would be a good option

:) Sounds great. I'll take a look online to find out where the nearest Best Buy is and have it delivered. Thanks

I was just checking out bestbuy.com and I don't think there's free shipping anymore!!! I'm so disapointed! Sorry about that, I'll let you know if I find something else.

one thing about shipping - even if it gets shipped to tufts, it does not get delivered to your dorm room. you have to go to mail services in Hill Hall to pick up packages. if you have a big/heavy package and someone is available, they will drive you to your dorm. again, they only take you to your dorm, you have to carry it up to your room.

64(?) The Elevator in Dowling: very few people know about it or use it, but it can save you from having to walk up or down the hill, epsecially if you're coming to or from mail services, Gnoman Copy, Gantcher, Elliot Pearson, etc.

The elevator in Dowling is like god to me. I hate the memorial steps. It makes the walk from the gym to Spanish class a non-issue. I LOVE DOWLING'S ELEVATOR lol

Definitely get it delivered - it'll come to Hill Hall, and if it's a huge package you can ask the guy in the mail truck to drive it to your dorm. It especially works if you're a tiny little girl like me and there's no way you're carrying a six-foot-long keyboard up and down the hill.

Hodgdon can be your pathway to an unlimited supply of food, if like most freshman, you use it as a convenience store. It's good to make a stockpile of food for yourself, especially in the few weeks leading up to finals, especially since nobody uses 400 meals (okay a few people do, but 98-99% don't)

hey, but is the 160-meal plan really crappy? It looks like one dining-hall meal a day and five points, that's NOTHING!

The 160 is actually pretty good. I had multiple friends who had it and ended up with unused meals and unused points.

everyone i know who has/had the 160 plan can never finish the meals OR points

wow, that's awesome. okay, i'm signing up :)

Only 65 so far and school starts in less than a month. What are the other 36 things a Jumbo should know!!!!

Just had to give this old thread a bump
any other things every Jumbo should know?

That was a good move to bring back this thread…I learnt a lot from it…

At the end of the year, you will see these HUGE boxes called Jumbodrops, where students leave things they don’t want anymore. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE! People throw away SOOO many useful things that you can use for your dorm for the next year, from rugs and storage drawers to bags, hampers, even chairs!

Awesome stuff I’d seen in a Jumbodrop and other places after people have moved out:

-cushioned rolling desk chair
-a TV, DVD player and TV stand
-a black 30 GB iPod
-razor scooter
-cookware!
-a doonie and burke clutch

Some people even leave mini-fridges behind. What a waste!

I snagged an iHome from Jumbo Drop during move out but it doesn’t have a power cable so I don’t know if it actually works…

Suggestion 1:

A great way to save money on books is to visit the Tufts Bookstore website ([Welcome to Tufts University Bookstore](http://tufts.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BNCBHomePage?storeId=20051&catalogId=10001&langId=-1)), fill in the course numbers, and find out what books courses use. You can get all of the course numbers and codes at <a href=“Tufts User Authentication - Stale Request”>Tufts User Authentication - Stale Request;

Then go to a website like Amazon or where ever you prefer to but the books used or much cheaper than at the bookstore. The store is great for a lot of things (supplies, notebooks, posters), but the book are really, really expensive. Freshmen year I didn’t buy used first semester and spent as much the following year as I did that one semester.

A lot of freshmen probably don’t know what classes they will take, but if you know you’re going to sign up for a course like Bio 13 and Intro to IR its a good idea to buy the books.

Suggestion 2:

You don’t have to buy all your books at once. For classes like history some books will only be used later in the semester. So lets say you just added a class and need the books. You can buy the first one in the bookstore and then order the next one online and get it a few weeks later for less cost and still when you need it.

Suggestion 3:

Be sure to get multiple copies of the syllabus when it gets passed out at the start of classes. If the Professor doesn’t put a copy online you’ll be hitting yourself in the head Sunday night when you realize you’ve lost the reading assignment and can’t get a copy online, it’s 12 PM, and you can’t find anyone in your class.

I try to carry a copy in my textbook and leave one in a safe place in my room as a backup.

Suggestion 4:

Use the gym from the beginning and don’t stop going! Once winter rolls around you’ll feel like you won’ want to go to the gym anymore and climb through the snow piles on the hill. If you go regularly you’ll be more likely to keep going.

Suggestion 5:

Go to office hours if only to say hello! Getting to know your professors is one of the best things at Tufts. They can offer class advice, discuss research, offer academic suggestions, or just offer helpful conversation partners. Also if the professor doesn’t know you it will be harder for them to remember you when writing recommendations, giving advice, etc.

What’s the process? Do you have to box up every last personal belonging? Where does it get stored? Does anyone help you? My daughter was assigned to Richardson (even though it’s all women and she did not request that)…but nonetheless, the location seems very well situated. She will go home to the West Coast for winter break and I am wondering how crazy/stressful it might be to complete finals, then have to worry about packing up her dorm before jamming to the airport to catch a plane…not to mention having to unpack and set it all up again upon her return to campus…Is there any benefit or trade off?

I think they got locking closets to put their stuff in? Generally people leave a lot of their stuff out in the room on faith that whoever’s staying there for the few weeks of early return is polite and doesn’t trash it. At least that’s my experience from hanging out in Richardson a few times during break.
