First of all, the 1098T will only have tuiton and fees on it. Does the $9300 you paid include room and board or books and supplies? Next you have to look at the dates on the bills you got from the school. The 2012 1098T will only have amounts billed in 2012. Did you actually pay any of that $9300 in a year other than 2012, 2011 or 2013? 1098Ts and taxes in general go by tax year, not school year.

Just got word that my son’s school has let the students know they will be re-issuing 1098-T forms due to an error…it’s possible there is an error on your form?

my son graduated in May 2012. We were making payments to the school until graduation, will we receive a 1098 from Harvard? I’m not sure if we are to receive one since it will not be for a full year only the second semester since he graduated in may.

thanks!

guitars,

Take a look at old 1098s and see when H posted spring sem tuition in past years, that should tell you if you will receive one for 2012.

I just got mine in the mail yesterday, so they’re still coming out; and some schools now post them online.

entomom, thank you so much! great idea. also, would you know this… we received a plus loan for our daughter in 2012. the first disbursement was sept. 2012 but we actually have not started making payments yet. We cant claim anything until we actually start making payment, correct? thanks again

Sorry, I don’t know anything about loan repayment (yet, D1 starts med school this year…;)). Start a new thread and ask, as your question may get buried in this one.

thank you.

none of the 9300 was for room or board

i paid 9300 in 2012, i looked at my bill very closely. i already deducted the grants and scholarships which were 2907

someone told me that even though i got the 1098t form, dont go by it but go by your records

Was fall 2012 your first semester in college or did you get a 1098T for 2011? If so, was there an amount in Box 2 and was Box 5 checked? You could call or email the school for an explanation. Yes, I also think it’s best to go by source documents such as bills.

If you took out a loan to help pay tuition, what you actually paid in tuition is what you claim, not the loan amount.

2012 was not my first year in school

i did get a 1098t in 2011

on my 2011 1098t form there wan an amount in box 2 and box 5. i got credit for those last year

If you used the 2011 amounts as expenses for 2011 taxes you can’t use them again for 2012. You may have paid $9300 in 2012 but if the university uses box 2 they likely billed in 2011 for spring 2012 and that amount wouldn’t be included again on the 2012 1098T.

i was billed spring 2012 in 2012 because i registered late

Sorry, I confused box 5 with check box 7 in my previous posts. Like mentioned in post #3, they could have made a mistake. I would contact the school and get an explanation or a corrected 1098T.
