I just got a 1098T form for a class my former employer had me take last year. I didn't pay for the class as it was partially paid by my employer and partially by TEACH. The ONLY figure on the form is for box 5, Scholarships or Grants. Shouldn't that same figure be in Box 1, Payments Received? I didn't pay anything and I didn't get any cash back either. I feel like the 1098T is showing that I came away with all the scholarship money. Is this right?

Oh, I forgot to add that I ended up paying back my employer for her part a couple months later. So I guess I did indirectly pay for a portion of the class.

I haven’t a clue to the answer to your question, but have one of my own regarding a 1098-T for my kid–it appears to add both a tuition scholarship and earnings from a summer research grant in box 5. My kid tells me that some taxes were taken out of the summer paychecks (and we paid room and board during the summer)…shouldn’t the earnings portion have been reported separately on a W-2?

I hope someone with an accounting/tax background can answer both of our questions.

These 1098T things just seem to be set up in such a way that invites confusion.

I am almost inclined to ignore this 1098T but that just seems wrong.

According to the back of the form, Box 1 “Shows the total payments received from any source for qualified tuition and related expenses less any related reimbursements or refunds.” So the school is either saying they didn’t receive any payments from any source or that the ‘related reimbursements or refunds’ equaled the tuition. Right? If I use the info from the form in my taxes it would be like adding the amount of the grant to my income right?

I am applying to schools for the Fall so this would affect any financial aid I get.
