Hi,
So, I'm a freshman at a pretty rigorous boarding school and it's about the time when my school has to register for next year courses. I was just wondering if my schedule for next year is looking good, needs to be stronger, etc. My freshman year has been pretty strong. I've taken an overload with courses and done well with my grades, but I'm thinking next year is going to be more demanding with the rigor of my courses so I shouldn't take soooo many credits, but stll find a way to try to keep it challenging. Also, there aren't any AP's offered for 10th graders (we're not allowed to take AP's til' junior year) and there is only one honors which is Honors Geometry offered for sophmores. However, I'm not the greatest math person, so I'm questioning whether I should do the honors because I don't want to set myself up for failure, yet I also want to show colleges I'm taken the most challenging stuff availible to me. Any suggestions for this??? I'm really good at languages though, so I'm going to take two next year and MAYBE a greek independent and I'll be a peer tutor in Latin. I plan on self-studying for AP Psycholgy to get a taste of the AP life. But I'm striving for selective colleges and all that jazz so I'm just wondering if this schedule is strong enough for IVY's if I maintain my trend of all A's next year. So anywhoo, how does it look? Please just lay it out and be honest. Thanks.
Fall:
English 10
Chemistry
Latin 2
Spanish 1
Geometry (Not sure if I'm going to do Honors yet)
History of Africa

Spring:
English 10
Chemistry
Latin 2
Spanish 1
Geometry
Global Ethics

you want to take some AP or at least some honors......Ivies want to see that you academically challenged yourself in school......by taking regular classes, it really doesnt fit that criteria but since your school does not offer classes that are honors except for one,....im pretty sure you will be fine

Um, for IVY League you are gonna have to really kick butt on your SAT and ACT and SAT II's, because there are freshmen at other high schools that are in AP and honors. And your schedule is not rigorous at all. I know it isnt your fault tha your school doesnt offr many advanced classes at your grade, but you have to understand that you are competing against other high school students who took AP as early as 9h grade. IVY League schools only accept like 15% of the applicants.

B_B- A.P.'s in 10th grade? What are you talking about.
ok no no dont listen to that.
Everything on your list looks fine.

Ivies usually accept students who have been taking honors their whole lives and then progress to A.P.'s in junior or senior year. You dont seem to have the honors setting you up for the A.P.s. Honors Geomety might set you up for sucess in an A.P. class.

Remember: your in 10th grade and your schedule is one part of a huge application

yes i did read that "moose" person, and that was addressed...in any case, geometry being taken in 10th grade? hmm...that isnt Ivy League material sorry, but i doubt u get in to Ivy League schools, runawaywithme person

No no no, if your ECs and tests are good/great and everything else falls into place, this is fine for the Ivies. No matter how much I think honors geometry is the only honors to be skipped, you must take it since it is the only one. You're on the right track in my opinion.

ok since we're on the topic of sophomore scheduling....do you think my schedule is okay for somebody who would like to go to Brown or UChicago? I'm gonna be a sophomore in fall 06.

English Honors
Algebra 2 Honors
AP Biology
World History
French 2
Intermediate Dance
Architecture

i would try taking french outside of school at the local community college and replace it with art, but frankly im not sure of how to do that =(

replace intermediate dance with something honors or ap........unless you love it then go ahead.....but dance is a waste of time.....in hs in only cheerleaders and kickline dancers in IB Dance....no acadamic value

As for APs for sophs...my school didn't allow them, but I went to talk to the counselor and they let me ahead of time. Try something like that. I'm having serious difficulty believing that only one honors course is allowed - it's just such an absurd policy, unless that's the only class there is because the school's small or whatever - but if you're aiming for ivies I would definitely advocate taking geometry honors, in addition to self studying psych.

Hmmmm, thanks for the comments. I'll def take the Honors Geometry then. Given that my school does not offer AP's for my grade, should I just self-study? Any Suggestions on what I should take sophmore year for AP's and how to self study? Like I said, I was thinking about AP Psych but I'm also thinking about an AP English (Not sure which yet). I mean, exactly how many should I take for next year? Suggestions? Well, I'm anticipating to do well on my standarized tests and I have a very, very, very unique background given my upbringing in a single-parent household, homelessness, rising from unimaginable hardships etc. it's a long profound story or a "hook" as y'all could call it, plus nice anticipated ec's,recs, etc. The only thing is holding me back is making this curriculum strong...ugggghh. I'll have to work on this before registration begins. Thanks so much for the comments. Goodness, now I'm so scared for my future.....

can i run away with you? i mean im a runner and you need a companion............i need to just run away from everything....too much college anxiety.......what do yousay?

we were not allowed to take APs either as sopomores, but a lot of people still did by going to summer school and annoying the crap out of the conselors.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention-my school has a funky math sequence. Geometry is techncially the highest level for 10th graders to be in because I took honors algebra 11 this year and geometry comes next at my school.

Hmmm Oboe-I appreciate you honesty, but honestly, you really should not doubt someone you don't even know. Sharing advice and helping someone is much more wise than simply saying that you doubt a person's dream is out of their league. I was just looking for advice on how I can be stronger, not a barrier of doubts against me. Yes, I understand that these schools are tough to get into, but I feel there is something very unique about me as a person that you really don't know and you shouldn't doubt people so quickly.I'll tell you that my life has been full of hardships and struggling to get by, and constantly people have doubted my family, yet, we still are always blessed to achieve things that people never beleived would happen for us. I know that this trend will continue and I will shine come my senior year. But whatever, I use the doubt of others as inspiration to rise. Thanks anyway for your opinion though.

Since you go to a rigorous boarding school, and AP's aren't offered until junior/senior year, I think that your schedule is pretty good due to the circumstances. Your school is well-known amongst the Ivies, so just keep doing what you are doing, and score well on the SATs.

Some AP's that would be easy to self-study for in your case would be AP Psych, AP English Lang. (if you are naturally good at English), and possibly AP World History (because of the History of Africa class, but it would require a lot of self-studying on your part).

maybe an AP in there
im a sophomore and i have two
just take the ones that interest u the most
and how the heck do u juggle both latin and spanish in the same year!?
