Thanks for taking the time to read all this, and I hope you can give me some idea of where I stand.

Too early, come back in a year.

You have too many B's.

But what do I know? I'm a seventh grader.

Teaching tennis is kind of a stretch for meaningful community service. And I'd have to agree with Jonathan, unless you go to a very top private that sends 25% plus to ivies, you already have too many Bs for the top 7 on your list plus Dartmouth.

6 B's isn't too many if you do really well Junior year, so try and get as many A's as you can next year.. don't want to start perpetuating a downward trend.

And yeah, come in a year, or better yet, not at all. That's the safest way to go, in my opinion.

suze you are such an idiot.......how can you even say that without knowing the context of his school and his rank........his rank could be high even though he has alot of B's.........

anyways, how do you explain low-rank/gpa, unhooked applicants getting into top schools? It does happen, and he has a shot. If he gets straight A's junior year, he would have like 3.85, which is acceptable for ALL of those schools.

stop *ing talking ,you dont know *

jason444, are you Hockeystar2b?

I am ranked around 11/120

?????? no i am not the OP

Okay, I was just wondering. I've never seen someone stick up for someone like that just because of his stats. lol.

jason, dahling, I did qualify my comments in saying they were moot if he went to a very top school. I'm the first to understand this as my school sends aprox 35% to ivies plus S and M. But VERY few schools do, and I haven't seen any small Florida schools on the ivy feeder list. But I'm sure you're very smart Jas......Harvard will be so lucky to have you!!!

you didnt seem to answer my question.......

how do you explain low-rank/gpa, unhooked applicants getting into top schools? It does happen, and he has a shot. If he gets straight A's junior year, he would have like 3.85, which is acceptable for ALL of those schools.

jason, about half the the class at any top college is comprised of recruited athletes, URMs, legacies and kids of the rich and famous. Those are the people who get a break. The rest of the class needs to bring up the stats. Even those hooked candidates are mostly (usually about 90%) in the top 10% of their class. And legacies have to be darn close to the school average. Have you noticed the no ivy lets their average SAT score go down year over year. Do you think that's a cooincidence? The schools do exactly want they need to keep several stats in place: those in top 10%, number of vals, SAT averages along with numbers of URMs, by group, which hardly varies year over year. What all this means is that it's a myth that stats are not that important. People seemed shocked when Harvard rejected an olympic medalist with decent stats this year. Read the article on the parent's board where the reporter sat in with Middlebury adcoms and watched them just dismiss kids with a single C. If you break down Harvards numbers you'll see that only a small fraction of the unhooked (and those are only the identifiable hooks) could have had under a 1500 plus SAT last year. There is a reason these schools perpetuate the myth of their holistic approach--so that they can reject 10 of 11 applicants and keep their place in the US News rankings.

yes...but how do you explain a non-hooked, low gpa/rank, getting in?

This kid is top 10%, and if he does better in his junior year, he'll have some sort of a shot, although everything still will be reaches.

My advice: Expand one of your EC's - is there any way you could become ranked in tennis? If you could be recruited for a sport, that would totally change the dynamics, but of course its a feat that many cannot obtain in a year or two, but if you think you're up for it, I truly advise you to train hard and try. That would be your best shot at getting into an Ivy league school.

Also, keep in mind that an Ivy league education isn't the end all be all, and practically every university has opportunities that hardworking students can use to their advantage. So if you keep that in mind and strive for the best, you'll be in good shape.

Now try and pull yourself from college confidential and don't come back, heh!

No chance for HPS, my opinion of course.

Jason, I've not seen low stats kids that are nhooked get into top colleges. Never. Can you give us some examples or are you yet another ivy wannabe with below average stats who is hoping the holistic approach is true?

Ah yes, a quick review displays Janson's post insisting that 3.5s should get into Stanford (on a snoy day in Palo Alto Jas) and that he has a very good friend, so good he did multiple posts on multiple threads for, who also has a 3.5 and is wondering if Harvard will count the online classes where he did better than a strong private school. Seriously doubt it Jas. I reqlly don't want to disillusion you, but giving some thought to who the idiot is might be worthwhile. Let's Chat next April.

I completely agree with Suze.

Jason4444 seems like a dick to me.

youve never seen below average stats getting in?

My friend got into Stanford this year with only a 4.5 out of 5 GPA, and 2100 SAT. He was deffered EA and accepted RD.

Flippy: You agree with Suze because im a dick? good reasoning.
