Is there anyone who applied for 10th grade, or anyone who's deciding to apply next year as 9th graders going into 10th? (or anyone applying again next year)

I've met about one person so far in this forum but I'm sure there are more that I haven't really talked to.

I've been getting pressured that 10th grade is an impossible feat to try for an international ORM student, or any at all (but just being ORM never helps much, does it?) and that even just so-so schools reject plenty applying for 10th.
Now I know it's not true to that extent, but I'm getting worried. Of course there are less slots open, but isn't it in turn also true that there are less appliers?

anyways if anybody's applied/applying for 10th, please post or pm me (:

My son applied for 10th and was accepted. Also, we know several international students who did and were accepted. We also were surprised at some of the rejections they got, but then again, we were surprised at some of the rejections and waitlists that non-international and non-ORM got too.
We asked every school (but one) how many students they accept in 10th grade - mostly for the fitting in socially aspect. Most schools add a considerable amount of students in 10th grade - between 20-40 percent of the total class.
If you have specific questions, I'm happy to answer.

thanks rightwing. I see you got into tabor and blair! I'm thinking of applying, because from what I can tell it's got a good campus and definitely some good academics in there as well. Don't know much about tabor, save for the fact it's a well-known school, but I'm sure it's great as well.

Linda S, thanks for that info, that calmed my nerves a bit. But thacher's 2007 incoming students consisted of 8 10th graders out of around 70 new entries. I know that's pretty good considering that thacher isn't a large school with a lot of appliers, at least not to the extent of Andover or Exeter, but only two were girls, from what I can get. the only thing that's really reassuring me it's possible is that thacher leaves its 9th grade class a bit smaller to make room for 10th grades, or at least they say on the site. I know not all accepted students go, but 1/4 of the accepted few is pretty... small.
Is that information about 20-40% getting in generally applied to all boarding schools (and congrats to your son, he's got a list of great schools he can go to!) or do they say that it's more for their schools than for others?

and also do you know generally around how many apply for 10th grade in comparison to how many get accepted? let's say the school can only have 100 open positions. Then which positions would go for each grade?

random questions, I know. but I'm kind of like that (:

Kickme, your best option is to call each school you are interested in applying to. They can provide you with the statistics. I am not sure they will break down the number of applicants per grade versus the number that are accepted, but they will tell you approximately how many kids they add each year, by grade.

Man, Kickme_cuzimcool, you analyze things a lot don't you?:D. I've been reading some of your posts--you're very thorough and determined. I am sure you will do well when you apply to schools next year! I applied to Lawrenceville, Blair, Miss Porters, and Taft for 10th grade. Got into all but Taft (waitlisted for FA). Am going to Lawrenceville with FA next fall. I don't think it is very hard to get in for 10th grade, at least it wasn't in my case.

And, if most Koreans apply for 9th grade, you'll have a better chance, won't you? Do you need FA?

I also applied as a 10th grade international student and was accepted at Andover, Groton, Middlesex, Deerfield, and St. Mark's, so don't worry about it.

roses&clovers, sorry you didn't get accepted ): it could just be a full school or they're looking for something different, as they always say lol

congrats literateur (love the name; my language arts teacher would love it too :P) I know there's been some posts about how I considered NMH not such a good school, but it's pretty nice now that I looked into it a bit more. 1100 acres too :O

sofi, that's incredible. did you apply the previous year? (int'l student, I'm assuming you're from either china, korea, japan, or singapore. that's where about 95% of us come from LOL) congrats, all those schools rock (turns out last year's class got into all the TSAO schools while this year the "best" ones we got were middlesex, st. george's and I heard st. mark's but not sure. last year's got into places like st. paul's, andover, and I heard someone got into groton and hotchkiss but it's likely I'm wrong)

thanks kitkat, but you could also call that "obsessing and in need of a life" :P Congrats to you too, it's not that new of news to me because I remember reading your name in the masters list and I was thinking ... ... lawrenceville. that's true, most will be applying for 9th grade, but what I"m worrying is that the general "quota" for these schools have already been met, and it would be much better to squeeze in a native american (sorry have to take this from you biggestfoot lol) than a korean in which there are about 30 more in the grade.

thanks for the posts guys (: my superhero powers will brainwash the interviewees and anyone who touches the application papers! THEN THEY WILL HAVE TO ACCEPT ME ! :O

i think that it's not that difficult to apply as a 10th grader as long as u'r really good...Sofi the chevere proved that true. Actually, I have a friend applying to EW this year for grade 10 and she was accepted- as a Davis scholar. How cool is that? (By the way, does anyone knows about this scholarship?) I'm applying next year, too...but as a 11th grader. Ouch...It's gonna be much more difficult.
Btw, I don't think Thacher is a small school at all...It's one of the most prestigious and big schools in CA.

andrea, welcome to CC (: I'm SO HONORED TO BE THE THREAD-MAKER OF YOUR FIRST POST :P

yeah Thacher is well-known on the west coast because it's considered the best alongside Cate. It's fairly big campus&facility-wise, but not a lot of people go (like 250 or something? around 60 per grade) there. still, it's a very good school, it's just not noticed as well when compared to st. paul's, exeter, andover, and all the east coast schools.

good luck, I heard 11th grade is much harder for certain schools. Other schools, on the other hand, have a TON of openings for 11th grade. but I heard St. Paul's accepts like 6 so around 3 girls. but I think sps is one of the most critical cases though. most schools tend to have openings for more students than that ^^

No, I'm not Asian...I'm actually French-American applying from Colombia, so I didn't have to compete you geniuses (or genii?) =) Those are all really good schools, and as long as you really stand out (in a positive way) you'll probably get accepted. I didn't think I had a chance when I looked at all the "chances" threads here, but I was pleasantly surprised last month.

sofi, I actually read your chances thread a while ago but didn't really want to spam the board with it lol

you're a very unique student, all I can say. daughter of a diplomat, travel across the world, in a sense (and you still did participate in clubs, which shows that you never "gave up" from the exhaustion of moving), stellar grades (especially with the stress), and you also live in Colombia even though you're not one by blood. Three languages helps a ton as well, and there's a lot that makes you stand out (WHICH MAKES IT EXTREMELEH HARD TO COMPARE TO WITH ME :O)
of course I'm sure you'd get accepted if you didn't have those perks in the first place; I have a feeling you'd write very good essays :P

congrats on andover, it said somewhere that you were going (:

I applied for tenth grade and was rejected by Groton, SPS, Andover, and Taft. I'm disappointed, but not completely depressed by it. I might reapply next year as well as to SYA.

haha yep, I'm very stand outable. not really. in school, i'm really quiet unless I'm with like maybe 3 certain people LOL
I'm hoping I write some good essays and get some good interviews. I'm actually planning to go to all the west coast schools I'm applying for first because it's closer and they don't have reps here I believe, and I'm making Thacher last because of course everybody knows Thacher is my favoritest school in the worlddd and i wouldn't want to mess it up (of course it isn't! stanford is :D)

I applied as a 10th grader to hotchkiss and andover where i got waitlisted at both. i'm not planning to reapply next year if this doesn't work out though, the transition will be a lot harder then.
