I hope so too, phase2. :)

trying again

*Four-Course Loads: A student may without permission or extra charge undertake during a college career a four-course load up to a maximum of three times. * Each qualifying student has until the end of the tenth day of classes of any term within the maximum of three to add a fourth course or to drop a fourth course elected after the start of the term. Note: It is not possible to elect four courses until the term in question has begun. If a fourth course is dropped later than the deadline specified, one of the three uses of this provision is thereby lost. A fourth course may be dropped until the end of the sixth week of classes. After that, the rules for withdrawal from courses apply.

A student who has already exhausted the quota of three four-course loads may undertake additional four-course loads only by permission of the Registrar; the student is charged extra tuition in the amount of one third of the normal. Such students should be sure to note that the decision to drop such a fourth course after the tenth day of classes does not result in full exemption from the extra tuition, but instead one reduced with time according to the tuition refund policy.

Thx for the info - very helpful! I had wondered if kids try to finish Dartmouth in 3 years by doing this - but apparently not - and probably w/ good reason. I spoke w/ new seniors this year - and they were already nostalgic about its being their last fall in campus. The intensity that the students here feel for their school is amazing. I attended a "Rah! Rah!" college - but the Dartmouth culture makes their enthusiasm seem apathetic by comparison.

Re: Crew - Does anyone know what the Green Monster Freshmen is Nov 3?

phase2,

All I know is that the freshmen rowers participate in only two races during the fall term- the Green Monster invitational that Dartmouth hosts every year- freshmen boats from other colleges travel to Hanover and they race on the Connecticut River. This year it is on Nov. 3rd. The the following weekend, the Dartmouth freshmen will travel to Princeton NJ to race in the Belly of the Carnegie that Princeton University hosts. We happen to live about 10 minutes from Carnegie Lake and are really looking forward to watching this race, as you can imagine. I am not sure, however, if all the freshmen will actually race or not- I think my son said that the freshmen lightweights this year had 7 recruits and 17 walk-ons which would fill three 8-man boats if they all race. I don't know if they'll enter three boats but I hope so.

If you haven't done so already, look at Dartmouth's Athletics web site. Under the lightweight crew tab you'll get to a page that has, among other things, a button labeled "training schedule" and you'll see what they focus on each term. You'll also see that the teams go to Florida to train at the start of their winter break, taking a week out of the time they might spend at home- good to know if you were planning any family activities during that time.

Another interesting think to look for on that site is the "2007-08 Media Guide" that has information on the coaches, the history of crew at Dartmouth, etc.

Thx momofrower. You are very lucky you'll get to see the race! Do non-recruits travel to Florida too? My s enjoys the coaches - high energy- good senses of humor - and the way they mix up the workouts. What gear did you get your son for the colder weather w/ crew? Is a splash jacket necessary? Pogies?

What language are you speaking?

Pogie is a new term I picked up last week. It is like a sock you put over the oar and slip your hands into to stay warm - and like everything else $$$ - $30...
Okay - just to get it out of my system - s now eats 4 meals a day... but that rant is on hold until after ...midterms? Is that possible? anyway - this is a big week - first tests and papers due...first indication of Wall Street or Main Street...

Care to explain the last sentence? What first indication?

As for the rant regarding the meal plan, I just ask son to try balance it out with the types of food he selects. He will definitely go over , so it is just a matter of how much...

Midterm this week? I didn't know that. lol But he already had some papers handed in and gotten them back.

Foggy: I think she means Wall Street = Huge success, big bucks; Main Street = not so great, working in Podunk, maximum salary = $30K per year.

Phase2: What do you mean??

Very Happy - You are correct...but as foggy points out...my writing could be clarified...can you believe I am trying to make a living out of it? I visit CC to get rid of my writer's block... procrastinate...obsess...and rant...Dining DBA - which had been $1300 is at $600...s better start gnawing on trees..I will talk to him about it after his exams this week. foggy - papers back already? Impressive.

phase2,

I asked my son about his rowing clothes. He did not answer my specific questions about pogies, etc. but he did say that he orders his rowing clothes on line from jlracing.com and regattasport.com.

Thx momofrower. I stumbled on jlracing a few weeks ago and ordered my son some pants and shirts from there. He was very pleased w/ them. I liked that they were specifically designed w/ rowing in mind. I had wanted to see if crew was a passing interest - but it has become his favorite way to spend his time - so I guess I will visit these sites and get him ready for the colder weather. I'm hoping he gets to participate in the Nov 3 race- but it may or may not happen.
