11th Grade acceptance rates - startlingly low!

@Neato, here in England for schools like Eton, Harrow and Westminster - Parents register their kids when their toddlers. To get into like say, the 9th grade (year 8) you’d have to apply years in advance as well as do the exams earlier, and the exams are super tough (11+, 13+). I think American boarding schools hopefully won’t start that kind of thing. Getting into schools here is way too tough.

“This is all so ridiculous, and discouraging. How did this happen??”

It happened because in the old days only the elite attended boarding schools and, by and large, they attended the schools their fathers or mothers attended. The admissions process was a wink and a handshake. The democratization of education (a good thing) encouraged more students to break into that world. The ranking of educational institutions (a bad thing) caused prospective students to focus on a smaller and smaller group of schools.

It is not in a school’s interest to take you at 11th grade. The financial reason is obvious, but there are also social, educational, involvement, and longterm loyalty reasons. When a student comes in at 11th grade what they are getting is the brand on their forehead, not the full experience.

That said, if you look beyond HADES, your chances of being admitted in 11th grade are much greater.

Apparently, according to the website below, Choate accepts 28% of it’s applicants (least selective), and Groton is the most selective with only 19% being accepted. Most of the HADES have a 20% acceptance rate. Middlesex has a 25% rate. Lawrenceville has a 21% acceptance rate. Georgetown Prep is 23%. The rest of the school stats with the acceptance rates are here:

I don’t know guys, HADES have known to have under 10% acceptance rates. 20 or over just seems unrealistic. Is this right?

They’re false, Andover is about 14-16% .

I believe that Deerfield had a 16% rate last year. But keep in mind a few factors. Size of school and year you are applying.

FYI

Did someone say that Deerfield’s acceptance rate for freshman was 5% ?

I wish they would put out the information on how many people apply from each state…
Anyway, in the back of Deerfield’s admissions booklet it seems as though they accepted 67 sophomores, 17 juniors (that’s not much!), and seven seniors but maybe I’m reading it wrong. I was just subtracting the “totals” for each grade…

urbangirl: The numbers you cited are students attending, not accepted. Typically, the upper classes have a lower yield than lower classes, so about 30 juniors accepted is about right. Also, does the seniors number include PGs? There were many more new seniors and PGs than 7 this year and last year.

The early official DA acceptance rate was 14.3% last year. [A Perfect Storm in Admissions|The Scroll](http://scroll.deerfield.edu/?p=3352)

I’m screwed, I have excellent extra curricular and self studying Calculus BC and 10 other AP’s, but my grades are mediocre, applying for andover, we shall see

SPS does not “save” any openings after 10th grade. So, the only Junior openings would be from attrition - those leaving after 10th grade…thus the very low number.

In the last 3 years (including this fall), we have visited (with 2 children applying over 3 years) 14 or so different schools including many of the schools listed in this thread. Since my children have applied for 10th grade, we usually ask how many do they admit - mostly to see how the social dynamics will play out. I would say that in pretty much every case, they tell us the number of 10th graders and then go on to say that it is the same acceptance rate pretty much in all grades - maybe less students admitted in 11th, but less apply.
Deerfield of course is the exception in recent years due to the over enrollment of girls already mentioned.
