12/3/2014 SAT Question of the day help!

On the last day of a one-week sale, customers numbered 149 through 201 were waited on. How many customers were waited on that day?

(A) 51
(B)52
(C)53
(D)152
(E)153

Explanation:

The number of customers who were waited on that day is (201 -149) + 1 = 53, as the total number of customers is those customers numbered 149 to 201 inclusive.

Why would you add one to 201 - 149? . I picked choice (B), i did 201 - 149 but did not add one. I always get these types of questions wrong. I either forgot to add one or minus one. Can someone give me a in depth explanation? THANKS !!

Let’s try it with more simple numbers. Can you see how the numbers 201 and 149 resemble 9 and 11 (at least in the units digit)? So 11 minus 9 is 2, but the number of customers between 9 and 11 is 3 (9, 10 and 11).
