Hi guys!
So I got a 12 on my first SAT essay (December 2014) but my overall writing was a 760.
Then I took Jan 2015 and got an 11 essay but 740 overall writing.
I was wondering if this looks bad for colleges–like I can write but my grammar is terrible or something?
Thanks for the help in advance!
bump?
double bump?
I wouldn’t consider 760 or 740 bad… But I’m terrible at writing lol…
Cr 800 math 800 writing 670 here so personally I’d be overjoyed with a 740
740 and 760 aren’t bad. I got a 710 and only got like a 9 or a 10 on the essay. Might have gotten around your score if I did better on the essay.
You’re fine.
Those aren’t bad scores. But, rather than feeling relieved that some strangers had to reassure you, I’d seriously do some introspection as to what it was making you feel that way.
Those scores are within a SD of the top. Take it a couple more times, one of them could be an 800. So what? You’re still the same person. If you think your grammar is terrible, take more classes in composition and read more. Practice helps.
Colleges won’t think that being only in the 99.6 percentile (or so) of the score distribution means that you can’t use proper syntax. I don’t know what would give you that idea.
The SAT writing section tests silly grammatical conventions that are easy to understand (and not that hard to master), but are foreign to most people that don’t religiously follow them in everyday speech (e.g. singular vs plural collective nouns). If you plan on retaking the SAT (if you are, PLEASE don’t do it because of your writing section [it will do you more harm than good]), then try to go through the writing guides contained within this forum and in prep books. Assuming that you can keep your essay score consistent, you are very capable of getting that ‘illustrious’ 800 (if that’s what your after…) with a bit of practice.
Did you buy the score report? If you did, just look at those sections where you didn’t do as well as you liked, and review the pertinent rules. You’ll do fine.
Again, if your other scores already give you something above 2300+, DO NOT RETAKE THE SAT. Otherwise, practice should get you that better score that you’re craving (although a 760 isn’t that bad…).
Let me guess: you filled both pages with poly-syllabic words?
I got a 10 on the essay and a 790 on the overall writing section. But both 740 and 760 are just fine. At some point, colleges notice if you’re trying to hijack the scores.
Thanks everyone! Yeah, I’ve got to retake just because of math unfortunately (670).
