Well I put it on me to use, but I don't just lie there snuggling with it (though in the winter, it'll probably serve as a nice heater)

yeah going back to the question, i'm debating between a 12" and a 14", and the 12" laptop is 2.5lbs while the 14" is 5lbs. Does that affect anyone's decision?

2.5lbs?! What computer is that? I have never seen one so light.
But I think that anything under 6lbs is totally transportable and shouldn't make a big difference (it's like a textbook).

I think if you want to be more mobile, intent on always carrying it around; especially to class that you should use the 12 inch. sometimes you wont have the deskspace for a bigger computer.

the dell latitude X1 is 2.5 lbs. And my tech guy said that if you're really gonna be carrying it everywhere 1.5lbs+ is a huge difference. I don't actually think i'll be taking it to class much, i think i'll stick to handwritten notes, although I guess it depends on how the classes start to flow. If my primary "commute" with my laptop is the library and back, then i guess you guys would say the 14" is good?

2.5?! I wish. From apple.com
"the 12.1-inch iBook G4 weighs in at a mere 4.9 pounds. The 14.1-inch model weighs just 5.9 pounds"

maybe other 12" laptops are 2.5lbs though. Although i don't know of any.

Ok, 2.5lbs sounds wonderful, but how much battery life does it have?! I can't imagine that thing running for more than 2 hours (and some lectures are longg)
I guess it just sounds too good to be true.

"Although i don't know of any."

"the dell latitude X1 is 2.5 lbs."

Yeah, I wish I could have afforded the X1, the thing is tiny. And the battery isn't crappy, it's actually very good as with most ultraportables. The only thing is there's no room for a CD/DVD drive so you have to get an external one.

The X1 is severely underpowered; it has a slow processor and a slow hard drive. You would be much better spending your money on something else.

i'd go for 12 in. and if u'r considering 14in ibook, also take a look at 12in powerbook.

I am astounded by the utter uselessness of this post. It's not that big of a decision. Don't tell me you're going to rely on other people to make small decisions for you. You're in college now. You don't sleep in a crib. Grow up and decide for yourself.

You want to know the difference between the two? The 14" is bigger!!!

What a dumb question.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but someone needed to give you a reality check.

Word, Sdizzle, word. haha...

I disagree...it's an honest question. If you go to the Apple store, you'll see there's quite a difference. Who knows? Maybe the OP hasn't had a chance to check out the store and see for themself. There ARE people on those board who have seen them, so they would have a better idea. That being said, definitely go for the 14'' if you can get it. Choose the 12'' ibook if your vision is very keen. Also, keep in mind, the base model of the 14'' is better equipped than the 12''.

the 14 inch comes with superdrive and the 12 inch doesnt. i dont even think u can get a 12 in ibook with superdrive...but i may b wrong. it depends on what is important 2 u. ( 2 burn DVD's or not)

I think that the smaller one will probably get hotter than the bigger one. Less space = smaller fan...and less surface area to dissipate heat.
I keep my 15" powerbook on my bare lap and it's never burnt me.

Sdizzle, my man, i'm not basing my desicion on everyone elses input, i'm asking b/c there are many people who may initially think a 12" or 14" is the best and come to realize, after extended use, that it wasn't the best call. All i'm trying to do is hear from experienced users of the product, what they thought. If you don't like that, then ignore the thread. I don't mean to be harsh but it annoyes me how people sometimes will talk just for the heck of it. If ur going to bash this thread, atleast put some advice for the topic first then bash it, but don't take up valuable thread space on absolutely useless comments.

Have you decided between the two?

Yeah, i think i'm gonna go with the 12 in. I went and saw the two. The 12" doesn't seem to be that small, to where its hurting ur eyes. I just love the compactness of it.

ibook, right?
Macs = my new love :) Enjoy
