My question was whether 120 eight characters a line actually means like 9,600 characters? It seems difficult to write so much in order to fulfill the word limit.Is it bad if i finish the essay in like 5,000 characters?
Isn’t it 960 characters?

1 line consists of 80 character
so 120 would make 9600 characters.

You are allowed 120 lines of 80 characters each. A character is any letter, number, space, or punctuation.
As an example the line above is 106 characters.
To answer your question, it is not bad to finish the essay in less than the maximum. The point is to have a well written essay. If you can do that in 5,000 characters, it is fine.
