Are there any boarding schools that accept students for the 12th grade?
Even if there are (of which there are very few unless you are a recruited athlete) - don’t.
From a social perspective, integration will be difficult. Additionally, you need to consider the college application timing… You will be asking for teacher/GC recs from people who barely know you, as compared to the rest of the kids who have been there for years.
If a boarding school is right for you, you’d be better off applying as a repeat 11th grader.
Hotchkiss used to accept students into 12th grade, not sure if they still do. As @skieurope wrote, the college application process can be difficult. The boy we knew had excellent grades and test scores but was only accepted into one college. In addition to the recommendation issue, it is difficult to participate in ECs or hold any leadership positions when you enter in 12th grade.
I move schools every year any way because of having to move locations so often. It doesn’t make a huge difference if I choose to go to boarding school in the 12th grade, as I would be moving locations anyway.
Most BS don’t take seniors except in special situations. I’m guessing that between the challenges they see for the student in figuring out how to both fit into the living community and the academic environment and the services they provide around college counseling, it’s a tough sell. If they are going to invest in you, they want to be sure you’ll succeed.
If you move every year, you may be in one of those situations. Are you looking for September because of an upcoming move?
Apply to United World Colleges? It is a two year boarding school program and while some kids go for their junior and senior years, many go for their senior year plus one post-grad year. You apply through your home country and get assigned to a campus in another country. It is a terrific program. Colleges seem to love UWC grads.
I tend to agree with the general consensus here. Most schools do accept 12th graders, but it’s only going to be like 10 kids, and 7 of them are recruited athletes anyway. Ask yourself why you want to attend boarding school for a year, when college is right around the corner.
That’s on the high side, and probably limited to Andover/Exeter.
