I am applying to UVA because I really want to go there. I know i am 98% a reject, but I wont know unless i apply. I think I may have a shot because my grapes have a huge upward trend, and they look at essays alot(mine are good).

You have a nice record and a good selection of colleges.

When we were looking at VT several years ago (for Fall 2003) they told us that they didn't discriminate against out of state students because they weren't getting that many applications from non-Virginians. Considering the record of their football team, I'm not sure if that's true anymore. Your SAT scores should get you in. My son had the same scores, but a higher GPA, and was offered the opportunity to apply for the honors college.

My son didn't care for VT although 1000s of folks in NoVA absolutely love it. We found it isolated and lacking in racial and religious diversity.

Good luck.

I would be very happy with any of the universities on my list. I have thought long and hard about it, and I really like my final list.

Bump

bump (10 char)

I think you have a good list, just don't hold your breathe for UVA.

I don't think the SAT's are going to help you that much. My prediction:

UVA/Rejcected
JMU/Waitlisted
Virginia Tech/Waitlisted

Your class ranking will actually help. GPA is too low in my opinion although your course load is good. Anything can happen but with you being out of state....................it's going to be tough.

okay i can tell you honestly, but you won't like what I have to say. kids from VA aka my school can't get into tech or JMu with stats like that. Those kids are in state!!!! We average in state for those schools : JMU: 3.5/1190-1320, Tech 3.6-7 1300-50, UVA 1450+/4.0. you're out of state. there is no chance, no offense with grades like that. we DO have some schools however you DO have a chance at beautiful locations in VA:
longwood, beautiful campus about 2.9-3.2 GPA average, nice place
christopher newport newish campus, increasing prestige/reputation, EASY to get into, and if chosen for the deans application (which you might be bc ur out of state) theyll tell you in 72 hours. Good luck, but your Virginia list is way off for even an in stater.

Why do you have a B in calculus and precal?

all i have to say is make plans to attend psu, temple, or possibly rutgers

totallysweet- that is a load of bull

the average SAT for JMU is in the 1100s, and for VA TECH its in the low twelves. For UVA its in the low thirteens

And I have a B in precalc becuase i slacked off a little.

I have a B in calc because it is a hard class.

ok jmu and va tech was a fair argument... but uva on the other hand looks for gpas in the 3.8-4.0 range excellent EC's in addition to 1300 sats

UVA also looks at essays. I hope with my essays, i might have a 2-4% chance of getting in. I know i am a very long shot, but i think I do indeed have a shot.

In fact, I probably have a better chance of getting into harvard(I am a legacy), but I wouldnt go there if accepted. I really want to go to a Va School, so I thought if i have a 2% chance, its worth the fifty bucks.

You have a shot with your good SAT and ECs, however your GPA is the thing that is really bringing you down. You're right about UVA, except it never hurts to try and who knows right? If only your GPA was a little higher.

Have you looked at the University of Pittsburgh? You would have a great chance of accpetance and is a very popular school for students in the greater Philly area.

I visitied Pitt, and I prefer my safety(Temple) to it, so I really dont see a point in applying

That's fine, I just like to plug my alma matter when appropriate :)

habdragon..whoah ease up on totallysweet..you posted your scores and asked for what people think they know out there. And that remark about Harvard also has some "attitude" ..come on now. You are a very gifted mathematics student (!understatment) and can make turn that into a very successful career track..many options to explore once you settle into a college. Your verbal scores are not going to make it into UVa for OOS unless you have some other rare contribution to make or are a URM. They are swamped with Ivy stat kids for OOS applicants and expect high verbals. Stats expected from NOVA are different than from SWest VA where we live. NOVA kids have to have the stats posted above, and averages drop when they factor in kids from poorer school systems. Otherwise it would be the University of Northern Virginia. My nephew got into Tech instate from SW Va last year with a 1250 and like two AP classes and no Cs, not a demanding schedule at all compared with yours. But another buddy seeking VT was denied with a 1350 and like three Cs on his report card..go figure. I think you have a shot there despite the Verbal problem, but not at all certain..way more popular due to football, and really class size is so not ideal there, so take a hard look at huge classes. But you need to pitch to a specific track at Tech where your innate ability would be an asset. If you feel you must apply to UVA, perhaps the E school would be a strategy..if you don't like engineering you can transfer into Arts and Sciences, but I fear you are wasting money and time. I really like the rest of your list..good choices and good schools all. I think Delaware is a great school and perhaps a better place to live than Harrisonburg but that will be up to you. My sister is a JMU grad. Lots of NOVAs there who are disappointed about UVa but many who really love it too. I prefer the Delaware campus and you might get into their Honors program...

Instate Virginia parent here.

I doubt I could get into Udel Honors, and I dont think I want to either. UDel is one of my top 3.

Heres what I think
Del- accept
UVA- reject
Temple- accept w/money
Northeastern- accept
JMU- reject
VT- accept
Rutgers- accept
PSU- accept w/money(I automatically get money b/c my bro goes there)
TCNJ- reject

I submitted VT, RU, and temple apps today because they dont require teacher reqs

I feel that you all are looking at his SAT's too much as a whole (which as a whole is definatly a good score)

However, i think his scores are waaaayy too uneven. This may hurt him.

What's going to hurt you is not your test scores, but your lack luster grade record. Even in your intended major, your grades are on the weak side. Your 800 only makes those B's and C's in math stand out even more.

My estimate of your chances: UVA, Northeastern, Rutgers, TCNJ, JMU - all reach. UDel, Penn State, Virginia Tech - match Temple - Safety.

Of course, I don't have your entire application in front of me, nor do I have a crystal ball, so I could be wrong --- there's no harm in giving reach schools a shot, but you may want to add one more safety school you really like just in case.
