I have heard that some boarding schools offer a 13th year for high school students who need to bolster their academic records and mature a bit more before entering college. I have been searching on google for information but don't seem to be able to find anything relevant. Does anyone know about these programs and have specific information about the schools that offer these programs?

it is referred to as a "post graduate year" or PG. they have them at most top boarding schools - check out Choate, Andover, Exeter, etc.

i considered it for a while, but there are so many more interesting things to do with a year of your life than go to high school.

Bridgton Academy in Maine is exclusively for Post Graduate Study.
You can find out more about the benefits of such a program by looking at their website.

the daughter of a former work associate got a scholarship for a post grad. year at Northfield Mt. Hermon and loved it. she was a soccer star but got injured her senior year in public school and this gave her a chance to have a good season before colleges looked at her.

Check out the schools in the MAPL (mid Atlantic Prep) conference. Blair, Peddie, Mercersburg, Hill etc. Great PG programs. It is a good thing for a kid to do to shore up academics or athletics or simply mature for a year. Colleges view it very favorably. Karen

you mean a 5th year?

The 5th year is usually called a post-grad or PG year.

My D's close friend was a PG at her school. He came from a well-regarded high school and was a bit surprised at how he had to step up his academics. In addition to other program plusses, he received some excellent college guidance while a PG and now attends a very good LAC. The PGs my daughter knows seem to really value the experience.

I know two students who did post grad years. One went to Loomis Chaffee and loved it. The other is still at a NE boarding school--and loving it.

Both were athletes--one a water polo champ and the other a basektball player. Both had mild LD. That extra year was the world of difference for them.

Scholarships are available...

Hawaii Preparatory Academy. www.hpa.edu

And your kid can learn to surf or SCUBA, too...

Seriously, it's a great school. Lots of APs, lots of ECs, beautiful place. World-class sea turtle research.

Is it possible to do a PG year if you are NOT a top athlete? My limited understanding of this extra year was that the schools only want top athletes to help their sports teams. I guess the prep leagues allow an extra year of eligibility after your public high school eligibiliby is used up. Am I off base?

Well the really top schools are hard to get into as a PG like they are other times but there are all levels of preps and every kid can find one to take them.

The PG year is not just for athletes. Athletics happens to be a big reason many kids choose to do a PG year instead of going on to college, but plenty of kids do a PG for academics, too. There is a fiction book out (I forget the name) loosely based on Deerfield, I believe. It is about a girl who was pushed hard by her parents to get into Yale and had to do a PG year to try to accomplish that. It is pretty well-written, actually. Karen

Another school in the MAPL League which Karenindallas didn't to mention is the Hun School (my alma mater). They've got a pretty good PG program, and I recommend that you check them out if you're interested.

Are there any PG programs for kids with LD's? And really dreadful GPA's?

Bridgton Academy for boys in Maine. My son had low high school gpa’s. Most boys do a sport but you don’t have to.

One of my DS’s good friend graduated too early based on his maturity level. He started school early and he just turned 18. He was not ready, and is just floundering this year without any direction. He has no desire to go to a CC. Does anyone know if any Post Graduate school will take a student (non-athlete) at a Post Graduate school for their 5th year if they have already taken a year off of high school? This guy says all of the time that he wished he was still in high school, and he was not (even now) ready to graduate.

I know some adults who seem to be in their 13th year of high school.

Thank you so very, very much! Anyone else have any resoruces, please let me know, so that I can pass them on to my friend. I am so worried about her son - I have known him since before our kids started school & he is a great kid, who just went in the wrong direction.
