i got a 142 on my psat this year (worst test-taking experience of my life!) but i recently took a psat practice test as an act of redemption and i got a fairly decent 198...none of these scores are anywhere near my desired 220[2200]. what do you guys think is going on? am i a complete idiot or do i have potential?
btw: i was a nervous reck through the entire test...i had more skipped questions than answered ones... :[

there's your answer right there...you should have known that you would score low if you skipped more questions than you answered.

yeah, to get a score like the one you want, you can only get a few wrong, and the rest all filled in and correct. You can't be skipping any problems.

I think you need to study everyday. Between now and the next SAT, May 3, there is more than a whole month. If you set a side a good sized study period for every single day until then, you can dramatically improve. Be sure that you study hundreds of vocab words. If you simply memorize the raw material of the CR section, such as simple words and definitions, you can improve greatly. Also, be sure that you know the material on the math test. You want to make sure that you know how to solve every type of the problem that the practice tests give you. Go in and get help from a math teacher at school if you must. It is crucial.

thank you so much!
but should i take more practice test [with a calmer state of mind]?

^definitely take more practice test...
