1500 SAT score, enough for average colleges?

Hello everyone!

I got a SAT score of 1500 (510 in Maths 560 in Writing and 430 in CR !) It was my second attempt. In my first attempt I got a score of 1320. It was a big blow to me as I was expecting at least 1700 to 1800 :
I am so sad despite I always wanted to apply to average state universities (I am an International Student)
.The university in which I want to apply needs a composite score of 770 (cr and maths) and I have 940. Do you think I have a decent chance in my selected university?

Other university needed composite score of 960 at least but I have 940 :frowning: Should I give a try?

I would also like to add that I have a GPA of 3.4 and have excellent letter of recommendations.

A 1500 and a 3.4 isn’t’ that great for an international. Which college are you applying to?

Cleveland State University.

By the way my gpa of 3.4 is out of 4. Isn’t my gpa good for average universities? :frowning:

That depends. I would’t call CSU “average”.

:frowning:

By the way on what it depends ?

A 3.4 is pretty average for a US student, and mediocre for an international. Most internationals have a GPA of around 3.7-4.0. Topping that off with a really mediocre SAT score, I’d say that you need to work harder. You MIGHT get into CSU, but your SAT score will drag you down, while your GPA may or may not benefit you.

A 3.4 GPA can sometimes be counter-balanced by good extracurricular activities. What are your ECs?

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it.

Hmm that’s really sad.
I have participated in various debates and have won 1st position in most of them. In academic wise I got around 91/100 in maths which I feel is very rare here. I don’t need any scholarship or financial aid. I am happy to pay the entire tution fees.
I also want to apply in ,Wichita State University , San Francisco state university and california state university sancramento.

I think the formula which I used to calculate my gpa of 3.4 was wrong. If I calculate my gpa with with grading table ( in which A equals to 4 , A- equals 3.7 etc) my gpa comes out to be 3.6.

@Ibieee most schools will do this:
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0

And + and - don’t count.
Try to calculate it like that.

In that case it would be 3.6 again.

“Sacramento.”

I’d generally avoid converting percentage scores to GPA if only percents show up on your transcript.

Which education system do you follow? You shouldn’t convert your grades/marks/percentages to GPA, because they are completely different systems. The conversions won’t be accurate.

I follow India system of grading where it is out of 100. I have 88% out of 100 ( in total of all the subjects)

Which Indian one? CBSE, ISC, or State Board? A 91 in Maths is pretty normal in India, anyone who takes CBSE always gets an 85+.

Regardless, do not convert your percentage to GPA, report it the way it was given to you (in its percentage form).

You can’t have an “88% out of 100”. Your average is 88/100, which is 88%.

CBSE
And I don’t think it’s true. People who study hard get above 85% . I know many who get around 70%.

Consider SAT optional schools.

Why don’t you take a look at some of the people who apply to colleges? See if they have around a 70%. I guarantee most of them don’t. An 88% isn’t bad, for CSU, it’s good enough. However, your SAT score is definitely going to drag you down.

And CBSE has one of the highest percentages of people getting ~90%. Last year alone there were 168 000 students getting greater than a 90%.

Thanks guys for your replies!

Do you guys that I have a good chance in universities where SAT is optional?

Yes.
