Is anybody familiar with the dorm 153 Hemenway? I understand it's "suite style" but no nothing else. Is it newly updating? What are the bathrooms provided with? Thank you!! Also, does anyone know anything about an Economy Double? I did not request one and got put into one and have no idea how.

153 Hemenway appears to be the most elusive dorm on campus- there isn’t much information around about it. It’s probably because it’s relatively small compared to the other dorms.

In any case, I’ve done a bunch of hunting to figure out some info. Depending on your suite, you may have two doubles and one single, three doubles and a single, or whatever other combinations of doubles and singles, with more doubles than singles usually being the case. Each suite has its own bathroom, and you may or may not have a living room. You might have a bay window. Maybe not. Rumor has it it’s carpeted. Used to be an upperclassmen dorm, but they changed it in recent years.

It’s located adjacent to Loftman, and is pretty much another part of it. It’s on the northern side of campus, right behind Stetson, which is probably the dining hall you’ll use. You need to cross Hemenway and Huntington to get to where most classes are held. Hemenway- small side street. Huntington, massive thoroughfare. Light rail tracks run in between.

Economy double means it’s a room intended for two, with the possibility of your own closet, always your own desk and dresser. Whatever you request bears just a bit of bearing on your placement, it’s mostly random. I requested an economy quad, got an economy double. Not complaining here. :P

All in all, Hemenway appears to be the nicest non-honors housing available. High five. c: Probably gave you more info than you needed, but hey, other people might want it.

Sorry I wasn’t able to answer some of your questions, I just know what I could find online. If anyone else could shed any light on the dorm, I’d appreciate it.

I’m in 153 Hemenway as well, and you’re right, it seems that no one really knows anything about it except that its suite style. PlainConnor’s information is the most detailed I’ve seen. Even at Orientation, almost everyone I talked to had no idea what it was like.

Hopefully the fact that it used to be upperclassmen housing is a good sign.

I lived in Loftman as a sophomore, which is essentially the same building as 153. It’s not super updated and it’s an older building, but it’s probably nicer than the stetsons/speare/white. Location is awesome, literally across the street from stetson/marino, about a 5-10 minute walk to class, and in the middle of everything.

In loftman (which I assume is exactly the same as 153, but can’t make any guarantees), bedrooms and common rooms are carpeted, while kitchen and bathrooms are laminate. The suites are set up with different #s of bedrooms, and if I remember correctly there are two suites per floor, so the entire suite is fairly spacious. The front-facing rooms look out onto Hemenway and have bay windows, the back-facing rooms look into an alley & other apartments (welcome to boston). If you do have a kitchen (I have no idea if 153 has kitchens like Loftman does), it’s pretty compact but has all the basics. All the bedrooms in my suite were big, with a pretty good sized common room and bathroom.

I really liked living in loftman, it was a great apartment. But again, I can only speak for loftman and assume 153 is similar (if not identical).

Thanks for the info, Emily. Gives us good insight into the unknown regarding Hemenway. Any other questions can be answered when we move in, in two weeks. Looking forward to it.

I have a question of my own, however. What do you do during the first few days after you arrive?

153 does not have a kitchen, and I do think that it’s one of the nicer freshman dorms because of its location and size. It’s old, but I think it’s charming.

Last year my friends and I went to some Welcome Week events (barbeque, Target trip, etc) and I believe that the MFA’s College Night is around that time too.

My daughter lived there. Prior to gaining access to the bldg., we met a woman walking by who happenned to have lived there several years before. We were completely perplexed when she stated “Oh my God, it was horrible. The bldg is old, the floors are so uneven that the doors stay ajar, the rooms are tiny, etc… It was the best year of my life and I made friends who will be in my life forever. I will never forget the fun and special times I spent in that dorm.” After living there, my daughter completely understands now and would tell you exactly the same thing. It was warm and charming in an unexplainable way and the close quarters created a family of brothers and sisters whose friendships have endured.

very interesting! i do not mind the old charm, i just hope it is not ridiculously cramped. Housing and Reslife has been very mum as far as details go, including dimensions, which makes it quite difficult… i just hope i have a decent (comparable) amount of room considering there are two of us living in this economy (forced) double. I stayed in Stetson during orientation and don’t know how the room could possibly be any smaller than that!!!

As far as the bathrooms are concerned, is it one bathroom, one sink? small? I know these answers are hard to come by so thank you again and in advanced to anyone who is able o provide insight!

153 Hemenway is the best. I moved into there freshman year after living a semester in Stetson West. Basically my room opened into a hallway that had four rooms attached to it. Three bedrooms (which had 2 persons in each) and one private bathroom to be shared between the six of us. Most of my roommates had other things going on so it was never really crowded and worked out well. I really enjoyed it, there was a good sense of community between the residents on my floor.

Depending on what room you have some house 6 students, others four. Some have a common room plus bathroom and 3 bedrooms, others (like mine) only have a bathroom and 3 bedrooms, and still others only have one large room (shared with 4 people) and a bathroom. It just is kinda the luck of the draw.

I didn’t notice an “old charm” to the place, though it did have its own unique (but good) smell. I will agree on the family deal. As I said before, there was a good sense of community amongst the members of my floor. I think you will find 153 to be a good and enjoyable place. Not like the prison feel that the Stetson’s have. Those dorms ****ing suck.

Jumping into this thread a little late (and I’m sure those who had questions already moved in but in case not…), I also lived in 153 my freshman year. I was on the 2nd floor and my room was an economy triple with a private bathroom and one other bedroom, an economy double. The layout does really depend on which room/floor you are in. My economy triple was huge- plenty of walking space in the middle of the room and nice bay windows facing the front of the street. My suitemates in the econ double faced an alleyway =/ But 153 is definitely more intimate than Stetson and the other huge dorms. It’s quieter because there are fewer people and people actually get to know each other. There were little “quirks” e.g. our toilet leaked into the room downstairs… but I’d take that over the shared facilities and tiny cell-like rooms in Stetson any day.
