1693 Scholar process for class of 2019

So if my DD has not gotten an email yet, it isn’t going to happen for her?

@CoMoMom: Not true. Read the responses to the “Decoding the Cypher” blog. They’re sending out the e-mails in batches and hope to have the bulk of them out by next week. Even with that, if an application is reviewed late in the process and Admissions thinks that person would qualify as a 1693 Scholar, s/he’ll get an e-mail. They’re still sending out postcards, too, although that will probably end within the next week or two.

Hi guys! This afternoon, I was notified via email that I’m a 1693 candidate, and I’m thrilled! This brings up a conflict, however: if I am fortunate enough to be selected to participate in Interview Weekend, I’m abroad that weekend in Spain for an immersion program. Do you know if they will schedule a makeup interview or something? I don’t want to contact them because I’m afraid they’ll drop me from consideration if I do.

Thanks @CoMoMom! I heard yesterday. By the way, this year they said there were about 50 semi-finalists, as opposed to 70. The essays are due Monday, so I would think most of the notifications were out by now.

for those who are now semifinalists, can you please tell me your stats (i.e. SAT/ ACT scores, extracurriculars, etc).

@‌apesrocks I don’t think you’re quite right about the 1693 invites.

In the Admit It blog comments, the admissions folks say they’re continuing to send out invites to write the 1693 essays.

I assume that students who are invited later simply have a later reply date. They say that sometimes they still add students even after committee review has started.

But they did note that if students were admitted ED and haven’t heard by the end of this week, they should assume they’re not potential 1693s.

Best of luck to all, and congrats to those who have already heard!

If we applied RD do we still have hope for 1693 semifinalists? Thanks.

@danman1022 They pull from both ED and RD for 1693. But it’s a really small group of students; rumor is that they’re only having 50 students write the essays this year, rather than the usual 70. I think they had about 15,000 applicants this year, so even if it’s 70, that’s less than one half of one percent of the applicant pool by my calculations. Lots of very talented students are not invited to write the essays!

You’re on the Tulane merit scholarship thread as well, right? Much better odds over there! W&M just doesn’t have much merit money, in contrast to Tulane, which has clearly made it a core part of their recruitment strategy. We had this experience with D1 as well (two years ago) – she received the Presidential Scholarship from Tulane, and the equivalent from W&M was Monroe Scholars, which is about $4K in potential research money over two summers. That said, she chose W&M, and has been delighted to be there.

@apesrocks Have you heard yet if you have progressed from semi-finalist to finalist status for 1693 scholars?

Has anyone been invited for the 1693 scholarship weekend?

Bump.

Does anyone know if 1693 semi-finalists have been invited to submit essays for 2017? I saw that the prompts were up, but hoping my son would get asked to submit.
