17 Credits

Hey I just made my schedule for my freshman fall semester and I was wondering if 17 credits is too much

What courses compose those credits (as well as your preparation for and ability in those courses) is relevant to whether 17 is a sensible number of credits.

The courses im taking are…

-General Biology 120 (3)
-General Biology Lab 121 (1)
-General Chemistry 120 (3)
-General Chemistry Lab 121 (1)
-Calculus 112 (4)
-Cultural Anthropology (3)
-Exploration of Space (3)

I took AP Bio my senior year
I was in the science bowl competition my senior year so I did a lil bit of review if chem, and I was in charge of Astronomy, so I have an extensive knowledge in it…i also took pre calc my senior year

18 credits, not 17

It’s a lot and not something I would recommend for your first semester. Maybe your second. But you have no way to know how you will adjust to college and it can be really hard. I’d go 15-16 first semester and 17-18 if that goes well.

An exception would be if you were planning to drop one of those (whichever one you don’t like).

Having a lot is fine at first and it gives you the opportunity to drop a class without dropping below full time status.

Im well prepared for 4 of my 5 courses…i think ill do well…hopefullu :)

Bio Lab and Chem Lab might take up more time then you would think

That’s certainly a handful, but it’s definitely doable. As long as you stay disciplined and don’t leave stuff until the last minute, you should be fine.

Any other opinions

I think labs are generally undervalued … my normal classes are 4 credits and labs are only half that much, but my lab definitely took more time than some of my full credit classes. So maybe think about that? (I took 18 my first semester and did okay, moved up to 20 the next semester and did better because I was more prepared to work harder)

2 labs in the first semester is kinda too much.

Unless you absolutely NEED to take all of those classes at the same time (by “need” I mean, you won’t graduate on time or transfer into a certain major etc), then I recommend that you change your schedule. 18 credits is not only a lot for a freshman, but most of the classes are going to be very demanding of your time. It will look loads better to split up the harder classes into two semesters and do very well than to take them all at once and get so-so grades.

As someone said, 2 labs in one semester for a freshman is a lot. They may be 1 credit classes, but the workload can be as much as a normal 3-4 credit class (lab reports, preparation, etc.)

But, you do have time to drop, and usually that’ll be around the time of the first round of exams for a lot of classes. So you could always try this schedule and drop a class if it’s not working out for you.

Wow some of these comments are really worrying me lol…ill try my best and if I need to, ill drop something…thanks everyone

I took 17 hours my first semester, and I was fine, but I wouldn’t ever recommend taking two lab sciences together, especially in your first semester before you know how you’ll adjust to college life. It’s also hard to judge the rigor of some of you other classes. I took a cultural anthropology course and it was a breeze, but those kinds of classes vary in difficulty since there’s no cut and dry way to teach them.

I would just think the benefit of taking 18 credits would not be outweighed by the potential problems you could face by taking too much on without knowing the workload. You have 7 more semesters to take 18 credits, give yourself a semester to really see how much you can handle.
