My parents seems to think that 17 inch notebooks, such as the Dell Inspiron E1705 that I purcahsed, would be embarassing to bring to college. I assured them that it is no big deal and that 17 inches are the new style. They kept telling to cancel my order and buy a thin and light notebook. Has anyone had problems like this in college or any where else? I know this sounds stupid, but my parents brought this up so I just want to make sure. Thanks in advance.

Get what you personally want. People have lots of varying reasons for the size of their computer. Be your own man.

DAMN STRAIGHT, I plan I getting the same model laptop for Berkeley, and if anything I will look *****in' carrying that sick thing around. I bought I have 15" laptop back in the 8th grade, and when I took that thing to school, people thought I was a tech-god (and a huge nerd). Either way, I'm not going to college with anything less than 15.4".

It IS a hassle to have something heavy, so as long as it's light and big it's fine, but you will hte yourself if it's so ehavy that you never want to bring it with you. I started out with a 17" that was like 8lbs and switched to a 12" that's really light and holds a charge for 5 hours.

You won't be embarrased by a big computer, but if it's heavy you might not use it as much as you would a smaller computer

not more embarrizing that a 22" CRT

Ahahahahaha

hah, I responded to your exact post on notebookreview.com. I too went from a 17'' laptop at 8lbs to a 12'' that's 4.8lbs (Dell XPS m1210.) 17'' laptops are really hard to fit in a normal backpack imo.

i like my 17". It's not embarresing...and it holds alotta charge too.

You might as well just bring your desktop.

i'm not gonna be carrying this thing to class or around campus, so i think i should be alright. besides, this thing is not THAT heavy anyways. if i need to bring it somewhere, it shouldn't be too bad.

And, once again, I weep for this generation.

A guy brough a 17-inch Toshiba to the Mac lab I work at near the end of last semester. After a lot of good natured teasing, he said that he liked it a lot, but that it was a pain to carry around and that the battery didn't last long on it.

who really cares what size laptop anyone has... i personally will be carrying a 13.3" but no one would be like "ooo look at that loser with the 17" laptop"

If you want a 17'' and won't be using it in class in such, why not just save money and buy a desktop?

i'm done with college and i figured out that it is best to have two computer sets 1) something fast and formidable with a BIG screen at home such that it'll be easy to work and read stuff on it 2) a skinny laptop with small screen to carry around without any backpain and worries that it occupies so much space in your backpack that all other things like books and notebooks and lunch do not fit in

now if you cannot afford to have two computers or think that's a excess, then it is better to buy something that combines both of the above features: a formidable laptop with big screen such that it'll be easy to work on it

Nothing wrong with 17in lol. You can say it shows you are macho and stuff vs someone with a wimpy 12in laptop (I happent to have a 12in :P, but then again Ill have a desktop in college).

Size always matters.
Besides, girls laugh at a mere 12 inches

I thought 12 inches was pretty big :S jk

Go with what you want. The only problem with 17in is it will be tough to fit into the backpack. However if you can fit, doesnt mind the weight then why not? You get to play like FEAR in class.

instead of having two computers like some one said, get a 17'' lcd and a nice keyboard/mouse combo and hook them up to your lil computer when your at home.

I agree with lixuelai; HELL yes, I want to be ripping it up in Quake 4 and Unreal Tournament during my history lectures.
