18 credits too much?

Hello, Ill be a freshman this fall. I wanted to take:
Biology w/lab-4 credits
Chemistry w/lab 4 credits
Spanish 1- 4 credits
English-3 credits
Psychology-3 credits

Is this too much for a first semester freshman?

Your academic advisor is the best to answer this question. Where I teach freshmen generally do not take more that 15 or 16 credits in the first semester.

I highly recommend not going over 15 credits for your first semester. You have to learn time managing skills first. Time managing skills don’t come to you overnight, its going to take 2-3 months.

After your first semester, take as much credits as you can to get the most out of your money(if you’re ready).

Nope. I took 19 units my first semester and I got a 3.76. You’ll be fine, but you will have to work hard. I know way too many people now how regret taking less units their freshman year. The classes are easier and so you can handle more. When the classes get more difficult, it may be a struggle to keep up a higher unit amount.

Thanks for all the responses! Ive decided to go down to 16 credits. What do you think? Here is my revised schedule-

Biology-4 cr
Chemistry-4 cr
Spanish- 4 cr
English- 3 cr
freshman class- 1 cr

Within the original schedule, the only thing that would have really concerned me would be the fact that you have two labs. 18 credits is not out of the ordinary though…that’s basically every semester for me.

For your first college semester though, it is generally a good idea to take a slightly lighter schedule. Dropping psych is probably a good move, and will make it much easier to deal with the multiple labs you’re going to have.

What’s the freshman class? Is that just a short, few week long orientation class, I’m assuming?

Assuming that it is…your revised schedule looks very easily manageable.

Its a semester long, and yes its an orientation class. still good, or should i drop it?

Even with that class, your schedule looks pretty manageable in my opinion. The freshman seminar class will likely involve next to nothing as far as homework goes. Maybe a couple short papers and simple quizzes.

Thanks so much!

It’s totally doable, as long as you plan ahead. I recommend getting a planner and marking on it when you have assignments due, tests, and quizzes, so you can work ahead. I’ve met people that took 22 credits a semester and they always planned ahead and set artificial deadlines for busier weeks.
