18-year-old gives his $40,000 scholarship to other teens

This is a story of a teenager who did something so generous — so big-hearted — that it’s making plenty of adults swoon.

love this story. thanks for posting.

Nice story!

I don’t think he would have been allowed to use the $40,000 for personal, non-academic use per NCAA rules. He had to get the money off of his hands some how ;).

Wow- a win-win situation. Hope this kid does well with his sport and academics.

What a great story!!

SaintSaens, I think you are wrong if this given statement in the article is correct:

I think we should applaud this young man rather than try to knock him down.

Nice!!! Thanks for posting

this is so awesome–what a wonderful kid! athletes get such a bad rap (mostly undeserved), that it’s nice to hear about the good news for a change. all the best to him at csun!

and starbright: i agree.

Great story about the kid: I am not sure it is a great story about how a ‘scholarship’ contest is based on free-throws. Or how Compton High only has 80 kids with a 3.0. Or how 8 of those kids were ‘randomly’ chosen to participate. Or how a failing high-school is able to allow cameras and film makers into the gym for (what appears to be) a one time publicity stunt.

great story, but Imontoya has a good point.

^^It doesn’t matter what the circumstances of this contest were or what the motives of the sponsers were. This young man could have taken that money and purchased a car or used that money for four years of partying on scholarship money. Instead he did an extradinary thing and donated it to others. This is such a rare and generous act for a young 18 year old. He deserves nothing but kind words, and best wishes for a lifetime of good things to come. This story touched my heart!

This young man has so much he could teach to others. I hope this article does just that. Bravo to his parents for a magnificent job in raising him!

tangential story-- a freind of mine won a trivia contest (one of those ones held in a mall sponsored by some radio station or something). First prize was a 10K college scholarship. He has no kids. He gave it to his nephew.
