Is getting into UCB, UCLA, and UCSC even possible- if i have a really good hook, can I do it?

What’s the hook?

UCLA???
your hook better be DAAAMMMNN good

I have an 1850 and I’m applying to USC.

^^ Nickel- USC is a PRIVATE university. the UC’S are PUBLIC.

Your chances are nil at UCB, and UCLA. Take a look at the low #'s of OOS students accepted at these UC’s. Acceptance from OOS students into the top UC’s requires top stats. gpa’s and a hook. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/365439-out-state-admissions-ucs.html

my first question would be WHY do you want to go to a UC out of state? The cost is over 40K/year!! The UCs are a great deal for CA residents, but for OOS you can go to a private school with much more personal attention, smaller classes, better advising, etc. and still pay less than 40K/year.

And if you’re thinking that after 1 year you will qualify for in-state rates, think again. They have very strict rules that make this pretty much impossible (look up the residency requirements on the ucla web site).

I know the UCs are public and USC is private. I just mentioned it because USC and UCLA have admission rates that are pretty close and they’re both selective. Sheesh. But yeah, I’m not applying to public schools since I’m out of state. They tend to charge you extra tuition. All the private schools I’m applying to don’t.

well, i have some pretty good service stuff. it’s pretty hookish. i am also applying to USC, I guess I really would rather get into USC but I guess I am going to have just the same amount of trouble. The only redeeming factor is that I have a link to USC. IMAGINE Entertainment is making a movie about our school and my father, he’s a football coach at my hs. An alumni from USC and CEO of Productions has stayed at our house- if I include that kind of information in the optional section do you think it may help a little?

a USC alum definitely won’t help with admissions to UCLA, particularly during rivalry week . :D

USC is big on test scores (they like to boast their scores are higher than Cal’s), so you both have a negative on your apps, and will require strong transcripts. btw: the UCs focus much more on transcripts and aren’t as big on test scores as is 'SC.

USC is a really good school. If I don’t get into Stanford, maybe I’ll see you there? ^_~ What service stuff do you think is hookish? Just about everyone has community service. It’s not actually a hook anymore. The alumni status might help. What’s your GPA? Rank? Oh, and our SAT scores are close for History. I got a 610, but a 590 on literature. I’m re-taking lit, though. I got a 760 on Spanish, but I’m re-taking that too.

While USC is stressing ACT/SAT scores they are know to be flexible with interesting applicants. Is that you?

Are you talking to me? xD I’m not really interesting… I mean, I was on the Academic Decathlon team for three years and I hear that’s big in California since that’s where Acadec started. I’m a minority from Texas. Also, first generation to go to college. Top ten. Lots of good clubs, etc.

applying to stanford with an 1850?
but it is pretty cool that you’re first gen to go to college, props

but back to bretjohnson, yes, ucla and cal are highly desirable schools and i can understand why an oos would want to go there
but with those stats those schools aren’t happening, sorry ![]()
but from oos why on earth would you want to go to ucsc???
that just seems incredibly random (do you have family there or something??)
and like someone else said
why pay the same price as a private and get the big public school disadvantages
there are plenty of smaller schools in ca that would take your stats
not many in sc, but several in the sf bay area, and then many more in greater la
look there

Yes, yes, I know an 1850 is very low. But I feel I have a solid application. Wanting to go to USC is random? Why is that? It’s a really good school.

well this is kind of difficult to explain, its complicated.

my community service hook-
I organized a walk for my friend who died of cancer. I rose 10k.

A feature length movie called Absent Hearts is being created by my school and the lead character is based off my dad and his role at my high school. A prominent USC Alumni has stayed at our house, and is directing the movie. If I write about this in the optional section of the USC app- do you think that might better my chances if i am a maybe candidate?

the op is saying uc santa cruz…read above..

well, give it your best shot and good luck ![]()
im awaiting an ea decision form them in a couple of weeks…

nonooo
that second para was about uCsc
which is pretty random for an oos

yes i agree, usc is an excellent school
gotta send that app in soon ;-)

UCSC is University of California, Santa Cruz

USC is the University of Southern California

haha sorry, thanks for your imput on the UCs- i know they are a long shot. I am really more concerned about USC. With the story above do you think I have a better shot at that?

I’m ranked 1 out of 334 at my school, and my gpa is 4.43… i just have awful sat’s 1860 :(
