Schools:

University of Maine, Orono
University of New Hampshire
Northeastern University
Boston University

BU, Northeastern, and Drexel are going to be very hard. The others aren’t any gaurentee though either, especially with that GPA.

why did he get a D in AP chem but a 5 on the actual AP test? what happened senior fall (like can he explain those grades to colleges?) i think it would probably make sense to go to comm college with the intention of getting a significantly higher GPA (he’s obviously bright but maybe hasn’t applied himself?) if he’s not happy with his results this year. he could get into a much better school if he had a 3.8 from comm college.

yeah i think he could rock CC. Plus it would be cheap. Look into that route. If you’re in NYS, comm. colleges and Cornell have transfer agreements that are VERY nice to take advantage of

um … no offense but you won’t get into any of your schools. Better stick to a CC and at least in Orange County, as long as your 18 you can attend. Props to you!

That’s a crazy downward trend, ha. GL to your friend, I’m sure he’ll get in somewhere.

Good luck… F’s and D’s don’t look too good.

your friend is smart, but how did he or she get an A and B in AP Calc, but got a C in AP Stats? Either your friend had horrible teachers this year or he or she came down with senioritis early or something bad happened to him or her. Might get into one or more of those schools, but I don’t understand why the sudden dropoff.

i appilied for USC and have about a 3.3 gpa i got a 3.4 this semester have been invovled in athletics all four years made varsity soccer freshman year and have done othr things like worked the polls for the presidentail election a and other things and i got got a letter of rec from someone who has donated to that school do i have a chance. I also have never had an f or d on my report card

Nicole B, that has nothing to do with this thread. I’m trying to help my best friend get chances. If you want chances, start your own thread.

Does your friend cut classes a lot?

Is there perhaps too much fondness for the computer games?

Could there be a little drug problem?

Having a crisis of faith?

Confused sexual identity?

Serious deterioration in home life circumstances?

Do not answer these questions!!! I do not need to know. But think about them and talk to your friend. The downward trend in grades is disturbing. Occasional high standardized test scores with some lower scores and erratic classroom grades is a big red flag. Your friend is on a downward spiral.

Good luck to your friend

OP = friend
is it not obvious lol.

He’ll probably get in at Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire, but the downward trend is very distressing–so it is possible that at least one or even two of these schools could make his admission conditional based upon him doing well during his last semester.

I’m thinking Maine is the exception.

P.S. You don’t have to apply to community colleges ahead of time in California–you can essentially apply and get permission to attend within just a week.

Oh, and Nicole B–don’t hijack this thread, start your own–but no, you are unlikely to be admitted to USC as a freshman with those stats.

I’m not the friend in question. Anyway, for those of you with similar situations, here are his admissions results thus far:

University of Vermont - Rejected
University of New Hampshire - Accepted
University of Massachusetts Lowell - Accepted
Northeastern University - Waitlisted
Boston University - Rejected

I’ll post his final results when he gets them.

And about hard circumstances; yes, his family situation is pretty bad. His dad moved to China for lack of work in the USA. His mom, a typical asian parent, pushes him to the extreme, so his grades are mostly the result of an unwilligness to succumb to her domineering methods. They also have very little money to live on, so everything is extremely hard for him. I’ve tried my best to support him, though.

He does skip classes a lot. Hell, I don’t remember the last time he’s been in school. I have, with the help of several of his good friends, convinced him to come to school on monday, though. We’ll see how that works.

EDIT: Ironic how, Calcruzer, you said Maine would be the exception. They have completed a preliminary review of his application, but will not issue a decision until 3rd quarter grades come in!

Uh, no. Arachnotron has something like a 2300+.

This is sort of the GPA/SAT combination I am anticipating for my Sophomore son. So far he has a 3.1, and @ 1600 PSAT, and I have discouraged AP’s & Honors for next year (which his school probably wouldn’t let him do anyway). Can the student in question share his thinking about taking Honors/AP classes?

Lol… this is the funniest thing I’ve heard today.

Final input: He withdrew from Maine and was accepted at Drexel.
